"A MOUSE PAD" - what an awesome idea! This is what I said out loud when reading your post. Exactly what I needed. Cheap and easy - just like I like it!
Of course, I'll check the sites you mentioned, too. I guess a real pad would be more durable, but the mousepad idea is great. I have been trying to think of a material that would work and that is the best!
