johnnyutah, when i lived in LA, shore diving in south malibu areas have been good for me in the past; the kelp beds in area have a bit of nice calicos of more than legal size. definitely think of bringing a suit - 5mm would be best - unless you want to freeze your ass off. calicos are a bit skiddish and a pole spear would definitely be a bit more of a challenge.
