I just pressurized mask and ears on the surface and kept it up as I descended with light freznel pressure. At first I though I wasn't clearing because no pop but realized that 20' down with no sensation of pressure I must have been successful. I did it over and over a good dozen times.

I think the fun part is tricking yourself into thinking you are "working on something" while you dive. It's like work...only enjoyable.
