Break-Away tip for pole spear

Wondering if anyone has tried a break-away tip for a pole spear. Some details as to what worked, & what did not would be appreciated.

I have an 11 yr old son who can't quite handle a speargun by himself yet, but does nicely with a pole spear. I would like him to be able to go after larger fish (Carp - 10 lbs - 30 lbs), but due to safety and making it an easier fight, I think a break-away tip would work best.

Thoughts?

Gene
