I think they should spend the bucks and put in electronic deterrents. I always wondered why they don't use like giant sharkshields mounted on bouys powered by solar panels. But even if they don't get electronic deterants I still think they should get rid of the nets. Number 1, Turtles are on the brink of extinction! 2) If people venture into the sea that's a risk which they take. When more people die each year in collisions with cattle in the transkei. With the same logic, we should then cull the cattle to keep their numbers down and prevent less deaths! 3) It's really hypocritical for department to make it illegal to hunt sharks, when they themselves are doing it on a large scale daily! If they wanted the shark numbers down just give game fishermen the job, at least they can get some fun out of it and they won't harm any turtles, dolphins or whalesharks.
