When we were going to Firenza or Roma, our Italian friends said much the same thing. As one of them put it "we'll steal your wallet, but we won't hurt you." I recall walking down dark narrow streets in Roma where I would have been frightened in LA or New York.

But they seemed to think Napoli was a bit more dangerous, so we took their advice. Or maybe they just thought it would be harder for us to avoid the places that tourists should stay away from.

Bill Clinton probably had better security than we would.
