dive time and cardio shape

Hi,
being relatively new to freediving, I'm wondering how my cardio shape affects my dive time.
My PB in static for example is 4:11 and my contractions started as early as 1:15 to 1:30. I have to say, that my cardio shape is really bad, done no cardio training for years. I really feel like I have to change this, but what would I have to expect?
Will it only shorten my recovery times between dives, or will it also be possible to delay my contractions?
