Re: First gun for diving around Maui reefs.

I have used relatively long guns to hunt reefs, rocks, and blue-water. I have hunted extensively with the Riffe #3 standard, as well as the Rob Allen Railgun. I don't know which Railgun I have. I'm 6'6" tall and the tip of the gun comes up to my lower lip when stood on end on the floor. The Riffe is just a tiny bit shorter.

I like using the longest gun possible (within reason) for all my hunting.

As for the pneumatics, I don't like them. Their power is inversely porportional to the depth. This is of course because they operate through a pressure differential. The greater the difference, the more force applied to the spear. As you descend, the force outside the gun more closely approaches the internal forces (pressure). At some depth (much deeper than anyone actually spearfishes on breathold), the pressures inside and outside the gun would be equal and the spear wouldn't come out of the gun at all.

Hitting a fish hard and clean is what it is all about. That is best done with a relatively long gun. You will learn how to sneak it into rocks when you need to.

You'll be glad you have it when your eyes adjust to the darkness inside a hole, and Mr Big is nervously sillhoueted inside.
