I would start out in body of water that you are familiar with. Polespears are cheaper, so that is one advantage to starting with them. Polespearing is generally considered to be more difficult than regular spear"gunning" under normal circumstances. I would see if i could rent equipment from a local dive shop before going out and making a huge monetary commitment to the sport. See if someone at the dive shop might be willing to take you out. Make sure to check your rules and regs, where I live you cant take walleye by spear. Try for some perch instead possibly. Most importantly stay safe, and have a good time.
