The bad thing about holding your breath until you pass out- you won't know your accurate time. Just cause you'll start breathing again doesn't mean you'll "come to" That may take a few more seconds. Also, most people do longer breath holds in Water. But you should always have a safety for that - fo sho.

Doing 'tables' is a good way to increase your breath hold time. Which you can also increase without the risk of BO. I basically went from 1:45 before doing tables - to 3:04. Then I took a freediving class (FIT Level 2) and went up to 4:15 in 1 day. I think I could of gone longer too- But was not comfortable.
