The part about the barrel, my thinking very well could be flawed but... The track is enclosed so there is less tab for the wishbone to "hold" on to. It seems that if the barrel where the band is resting was flat, as the band goes back to it's thicker unstretched state, then the wishbone would come off the tab even sooner. So basically, the angle in the "band track" would not be great, just enough to compensate for the change in the bands diameter.
I like the idea of the Hammerhead guns and the Omer muzzles that keep the bands inline with the shaft. It just seems it needs a little angle to keep the wishbone centered and pulling straight as long as possible.
Was that too confusing? I don't know how to say it real simple.
