Vis on the east coast was okay. Not good, but fishable. As Magpie said just a couple of small bass and a couple of decent pollack seen but nothing taken.

So decided to go west coast last night. Flat calm and low tide looked perfect. In the 2 foot deep shallows vis looked okay but by 4 foot deep you couldn't see the bottom. You could touch it with your gun but not see it. Not good. Decided to swim on out to see if it got better.

It's quite a long swim out to my little night flatty spot. At half a mile plus out from shore and 12 to 15 foot deep I was diving on the patch. Vis on the bottom was 1 to 2 foot, no more. With the torch pointing ahead and the gun out to the side you almost hit the bottom before you saw it.

After a few dives I gave up and made the long swim back, trying along some reef edge as well as over the sand. Vis was dire everywhere. Some of the worse vis I have ever seen.

Back in the shallows the vis improved to 3 foot, still nowhere near enough to see the end of the gun. A long thin mullet appeared in the torch beam swimming slowly and almost straight away disappeared into the murk. Mostly out of frustration I pointed the gun in that direction and fired, blind. Got a 1.5lb golden grey wriggling on the spear. Pure fluke. Lady luck was smiling on the just or the just insane.

What's happening to this vis? Just when I thought it was clearing. At this rate I'll have to emigrate.

Dave
