Re: Break-Away tip for pole spear

Howzit all,

The JBL slip-tip is a very good tip but instead of using the SS wire that comes with it, cut it off and replace it with a similar length of mono shooting line. This will lessen the likelihood of the breakaway cutting into the fish. Usually a 200-400lb mono will do more than suffice. Crimp both ends in the same fashion as the original and go get 'em.

In the case that you have aspirations of hunting larger than life game (if you can get close enough), then perhaps you might want to incorporate a "Manny" style knot to the band to attach a tagline.

To do so, replace the original band with a longer section of similar or slightly stronger band material, add your knot, and hook up your tagline.

This method will allow the fish to run in the case they get too feisty i.e halibut. Happy hunting

Note:
Do not throw away the original band material though. It can be cut it into pieces ad used for replacement retainer rings for your slip-tip or use them as speartip covers so you don't poke your eye out while not underwater.
