Lake Malawi and the waters around Zanzibar

Hi, I am fortunate to be heading to Malawi and Zanzibar within the next couple of weeks.

Any recommendations for freediving sites? I am especially interested in info about Lake Malawi (searching the forum archives on Google I have come across recommendations from Golfinho but I have failed to find the thread from within Deeperblue).

Thank you,
Lars

Hi Lars,

I have been to Malawi a few times, great place, you'll love it! and I know Zanzibar, just p.m. me with the info you need and I'll do my best to help you.

I'll be heading back there myself sometime soon.

Cheers, Golfinho

Hi Lars and Roland,

Got your message Lars and how's it going Roland.

Quite busy today to find enough time to write so i'll respond to this in the next day, there are some cool spots along the lake shore and it's inexpensive there. Malaria especially during the rainy season can be a hazard but if your immune system is strong and you have a healthy diet this will keep your resistance up.

Bilharzia from the worms that come from the waste products of the Lake snails is a problem around Monkey Bay (south shore area and a few spots) but i know some spots where it's Bilharzia free.

To my knowledge the majority of the Lake is croc and hippo free, more crocs on the Mozambiqican side. never heard of any attacks, very rare sightings....

That's your dangers...

I'll write more about some spots tomorrow, when I was there a few years back, i was scuba diving and snorkeling remember, not freediving....

Re: Lake Malawi and the waters around Zanzibar

Hi Golfinho, I am back from the Africa trip which included looking at some nice cichlids in Lake Malawi. We went to Senga and had someone sail us out to the island known as Lizard Island (we went on to the island and met some of the lizards).
Beautiful fish there. Also interesting to meet the fishermen in their canoes made from hollowed out tree trunks.
In the end, the people forgot to come and collect us. So it was only because we had people on the beach to nag them that we were spared the swim back to shore.
Later in the holiday, freediving on the protected reef off of Chumbe Island near Zanzibar proved a very worthwhile experience.
