Re: Capetonian Newbie

Ja them fish are sneaky!

Was diving a shorey with a mate here in PE on Saturday. After not seeing much for a while I caught sight of about three nice leeries cruising right under me as I was breathing up in about 4m of water. Damn so there I was bobbing on the surface like a chop trying to aim at these fish. Anyway looked

Re: Capetonian Newbie

Hey Guys
Was nearly crying on Sunday. Went to Oceana to swim out, but water looked crap, so gave it a miss. Next thing a few guys with a HUGE duck say they're off to dive near Coral Gardens for a scuba dive, and they invited me to jump on with them. Been Scuba divers, I did the gentlemanly thing and left my gun in my car. Well, viz near Coral gardens ( off Oudekraal area, about 400 meters out, 17-20 meters) was amazing. I Freedived alone off the boat in about 18 meters of water, and was amongst huge hotties at the bottom, and 2 very playful seals at one stage!! As you can imagine, the hotties were all over me because I had no gun, I swear they know!

To top it off, we stopped in the bay at Clifton on the way home, and had a beer. These guys were legends, thanks to Andrew and Catherine for a very surprising but awesome outing!!!

Re: Capetonian Newbie

What is it with Scuba guys! Last week I couldn't find anybody to dive with me so I eventally met some scuba guys on the beach who invited me to dive with them. Anyways I said 'let me just go get my gear'. You should have seen the terror in their eyes as I returned with my gun tucked underneath my arm. It's like they honestly believed that I was gonna shoot one of them. They went one way and kindly advised me to go the other. Suppose its two sports that just aint compatible hey.

Re: Capetonian Newbie

Lol lenny scuba guys in general fear loath and dread spearo's. As a matter of etiquette if i see some scuba guys i find out what direction they are heading and i go the other way. (they really are a bunch of nice folk but they sure hate pointy objects propelled by a thick band of rubber)

Bakoven is literally on the edge of Camps Bay heading out toward oudekraal. Ill show you a nice entry point where there is always a couple of schools of hottie's.

Re: Capetonian Newbie

Hey Covert, maybe my days have been wrong, but have never seen hotties at bakoven! :-)

Re Scubaro's, they are very cool, no worries, put yourself in their position with a 'predator' lurking around in the kelp carrying a stainless steel that gets hurled at big speed and is capable of attracting all kinds of unwanted attention!!

Re: Capetonian Newbie

AAah crap!
I dont know why it got cut short...
Anyway my friend shot a 10.5kg leerie as he was waiting at the sea floor while I was floating like a cork. Diving seems to involve much luck and timing is of the essence! Oh well next time..
Good diving and Good luck/timing to all!

It depends what you mean by safe?

I always feel safer in the kelp, whether or not is is actually safer than say open water, is disputable. Frankly there isn't any real evidence to suggest that we are any safer in the kelp, probally just wishful thinking. The truth is the Taxmen know you are there from the moment you enter the water, from then onwards it's their perogative to investigate or not. Obviously the prescence of blood in the water, and a struggeling injured fish increases this probality of an encounter. Although I have never heard of an encounter with a GW in kelp, but there is always a first time for everything.

Re: Capetonian Newbie

There was actually a attack and killing of a medical student in millers area a few years back if I remeber correctly the initial attack occured on the edge of the kelp bed and the shark followed the dude into the kelp and swallowed him there. Allthough this mite have been instigated by the fact that the guy wasnt very deep into the kelp and so it could have been easier for the shark to follow him in. I do know that in certain areas of Gansbaai and surrounds GWs have been spotted in the kelp itself as they hunt the gullies that run inbetween these beds...
