ballasting a wood gun

A friend of mine made me a very sweet teak gun a while back, that while it shoots pretty well is very light and suffers from recoil/dropping shaft. What would be a method to add some weight to the muzzle end. Do I drill thru the track add lead and then plug and bevel chisel the plug?
