Sounds great Nigel, I don't think I would be much good at that sort of fishing because even with my specs on I can't see those photos

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

Hi Nigel,

I know its been over a year, but I'm heading to Bali next week, and wondering if you have any tips. Specifically:
(1) How easy/difficult is it to bring spear fishing equipment into the country?
(2) Do you have the contact no of any operators there who could organise trips?

Cheers,

Marco

Hi Nigel,

I´m planning a trip to Bali next year, so if yoy could help...when do you think is the best season for spearing over there?

At what depth did you land the dogtooth and what´s the average depth to spear in Bali?

Thanks mate,
Marco

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

Spearguns are legal in Indo, as they can be bought in the shops there. In Kuta there is a scubashop that sells RIFFE and other guns.
Bring a gun in, in good luggage that hides it even though it's legal, but be prepared to bribe someone with 5 or 10$ if necessary. They may (as in many corrupt countries) tell you that they're illegal, but they're not. Even if they were it would make no difference- you could still offer a "gift" to the guard if necessary. If you go through Singapore- it is different- you would at the least have the gun taken away, and may be in big trouble as they stick to their laws there.
Lots of Indo has current so your best bet is to find a local fisherman or dive shop that you could hire or at least get advice from regarding good spots. If you don't get any solid advice before going, I'd still bring the gear and it could be arranged once you're there.
Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida have some great diving but again you'll need a boat and a good local at the helm. This would not be expensive though, relative to say Canada or the US sportfishing operations.
And BTW, if you're on a scooter in Indo and a cop stands out on the road to flag you dowm, just drive around him and keep going!

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

I live in Thailand and Bali is just a few hours away for me. I would like to visit there in a couple of months for a week or so, how much should I set aside for a weeks spearing? Would it be best to go with someone like Andre or best to go alone?
I wouldn't mind joining with someone else if they are looking to save on costs and someone to help prep the fish. I'd be traveling with my GF, who does not spear and does not get in the way

Is Jan Feb March good time to go?

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

Your definitely going to want to hire a guide if you want to get into BIG fish like dog tooth tuna. These fish hang in some pretty heavy areas with STRONG currents and remote locations. I have heard (though never experienced) that Andre will line you up with a good trip and most likely put you on the fish. If your not looking for tuna there is always shore dives from Uluwatu, padang, nusadua, and so on. Surf permitting you can find decent size trevally or GT and maybe the occasional spanish mack.

Im not that experienced with diving around Bali so I cant really inform you on seasons. Though my roomate was there from august through the end of September and he got into dogtooth tunas, big snapper and lots of trevally so Im assuming thats a good time of year. I was there (mostly in the mentawais) for the month of June and the diving was also really good though the area we were in had been severely affected by El Nino.

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

Sounds good, I love all of the above species, but i have yet to bag a dogtooth.

GT are great on the spear, Macks too and i have always wanted a BIG snapper. I saw a mangrove jack about 8kg last week, a good snapper here is about 4kg!

How big are the snapper there?

March would be great, I would love to meet up for a dive or two. Are you flying there just for thee spearing?

Cheers,
Siam

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

no... its actually going to be my honeymoon. March is the date we have picked but due to the recent events in our economy we arnt sure if thats going to stick or not.

The good thing is that my fiance likes to spear too so the diving shouldnt be affected too much.

Re: Bali Trip And Tuna

Congratulations!!!:fri day

That is so ace that your wife spears, I can't convince my GF its a good idea, she likes to fish rod and line, but only catch and release. Suits me, more fish to spear and no need to worry about her in the water.

I'm flexible regarding time frame, can't do late feb though as I'm going to the Andaman Islands with a mate and his GF. More expensive for us because of the flights but will be worth it.

Hey Blaiz, We are now going to Andaman Islands on the 1st of March till 31st. I am leading an exploratory Safari from the 10th-16th then 19th - 30th.

P.M me if your interested in Joining us, would be a great honeymoon destination!

I have 3 spaces filled and only 3 left and I have not even advertised the trip yet.

I'll send full details via email if your up for it o.k?

I would love to meet you in Bali for a dive if you can't make Andamans and will be in Bali on feb or april.

We are having a national comp, sponsored by PELAJ and possibly BEUCHAT. There will be gifts, prizes and all the trimmings. Thailand is a cheap and hospitable country, if you'd like to join the comp or just visit Thailand to spear let me know. My friend owns a resort and I can ask him for a special newly weds price
