Yes, the castle burned to the ground, as did a presbyterian church, an animal shelter, and a number of homes. The winds have slowed a bit, but now they are becoming shifty. My house and car reek of smoke, but we're far away from the fires (between the Malibu fire, and the "Magic" fire in Valencia). I feel really bad for the people in San Diego, they've lost 500+ homes so far.

It's good night in the epicenter's site.

I've heard varying reports about the fires. If you take the most dire accounts, over 500,000 acres have burned, 1 million people have had to evacute, and there are 13 separate fires burning. I don't know if it's really quite that bad, but it isn't good. I heard that the fire in Malibu is down to spot fires and the crews are doing mop-up, but that can always change. Hopefully, this will be over soon, with as little injury and damage as possible.

I'm about 20mi North of Malibu, 20mi South of Ventura (396 mi South of 'Frisco, according to the sign on the 101), or, Lat/Lon:, 34.2° N 118.9° W. Ventura Co.

My area burnt really bad a few years ago, so we're relatively safe. But with the Santa Ana's blowing, (what a love/hate relationship!), and the 9% humidity level, nobody in SoCal is really safe. Still, they've reopened Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), and the fire is 15% contained. But, as Batray said, there are nearly 1 million people who are in shelters tonight in SoCal.

The worst part is that people here just don't get it! I surfed Leo Carillo last night (almost full moon), and found a guy camped in the bushes with a camp fire going!! . I reported him to the nearest Ranger, who almost immediately arrested him. (Thank You Sir!)

Batray is getting our secondhand smoke. Sorry again!

The news here is full of the fires - the latest comparison is that the area burned is "larger than the incorporated city of Berlin."

I need to take pictures of the little guy and get them posted because his two little teethies on the bottom are now quite visible (and feel-able when he decides to take my finger for a test-chomp! )

As for the ears - I finally got an appointment with an ENT tomorrow - I don't think it is surgically correctable. Part (left ear) is due to noise damage that happened in the military. A twin-mount 5"/38 cannon outside my office had a bad habit of getting shot off with no warning. After the first salvo, there was a scramble for hearing protection but that first shot was the killer. The right ear :confused - no clue - it wasn't like that in 1998 when I had my last test. I will knpw more tomorrow - for now the hearing aids seem to help. I also have tinnitus but it isn't very severe - I can ignore it for the most part.....

Anyway, I believe the word was erringly so here goes....
