Re: Web Hosting

don't know if you still need help with this, but this is what I've done:

Registered a domain with Yahoo Business - for a first domain its like $5 a year or something.

Got my site hosted with Sitesled.com, which is free up to 100mb.

Then direct the domain name to go to the sitesled site - the only problem with it is that the domain name changes to the sitesled link in the address bar unless you pay yahoo a bit extra, but I'm ok with that for getting a damm cheap website. I guess it depends on how proffessional you need it.

Sitesled might have some better options for you too, maybe check it out, but beware of the hosting/email packages Yahoo offer, they are overpriced (which is probably why they subsidise the domain registration to cheaper than the base Network Solutions cost. )

Re: Web Hosting

Has anyone been to http://www.new.net?

It's a website all about adding more "real" domain suffixes (or whatever they are called) like:

.shop
.game
.sport (www.freediving.sport anyone?)

They don't have it fully supported, but some providers have signed up. They're trying to change things apparently.

What do you reckon?

Re: Web Hosting

New.net is a huge joke to anyone who knows anything about the internet, but unfortuately its also quite a serious problem.

New.net uses technology to circumvent the base domain naming system of the internet. If you had the New.net website 'freediving.sports' for example, you would really have 'freediving.sports.new.net' , but New.net technology would append the ".new.net" to make the address work using browser plugins and server re-directions among other things. However this would only happen to a small percentage of internet users, so your website wouldn't be accesible by everyone and more importantly it corrrupts the 'universal resolvability' the internet is based on. If it was used more widely than it is now it could seriously jeopardize e-commerce and the average person's confidence in the internet.

there's more about it here:
http://www.icann.org/icp/icp-3-backg...et-09jul01.htm

and here:

Re: Web Hosting

As far as I understood ... the ."new.net" suffix was about the fact that Icann don't want to use their suggested "TLDs".

Surely, if those TLDs were incorporated then there'd be no "conflicts" with the "one phone number" mantra that the article was talking about.

If they incorporated those TLDs - as new.net suggest, then they should work like any other domain name and not need the extra part done with their software.

Re: Web Hosting

thats correct. But ICANN work by consensus and I guess some at ICANN don't like being bullied by private corportations. Whether there is any technical basis to their opposition (internet stability or whatever) I don't know, but its still irresponsible for New.net to try and circumvent the basic naming structure of the internet.

Also, I think I read something somewhere about New.net or another corporation lobbying U.S congress to approve non ICANN approved TLD's , so that this circumvention would have some legitmacy, and that there is a petition going around to try and prevent this. Feel free to correct me if I got that wrong, I read it a while ago and didn't keep a link.

Re: Web Hosting

I' don't know the full details. I'm just saying what I've read.
I agree it's not good for an independent body to be bullied, but I think if they are "desired" names, then it's wrong for the idependent body to completely shut out a potential change.

I also think it'll have a lot to do with money and the fact ICANN didn't put it forward first.

yeah well but are they really 'desired' names? I never thought about having freediver.sports until it came up on this thread.....most ppl seem to be ok with the exisiting .com, .net etc maybe its just a case of New.net manufacturing desire as part of their business plan.
