Im dyslexic. I find it a far greater advantage more than a disadvantage. But im an awful speller (beacuse im lazy) and when i say left or right its really almost random. Consider your daughter luckey PODGE especially as our society enters a far more 3d world of media.

I have the left and right thing pretty bad too, I have to go through the which hand do I write with and which one's left thing to work it out.

Please don't think this is a personal attack, I am very curious about Your experience with this. EDIT: having read the article on wikipedia about dyslexia, this thread might be better named "Legasthenic?" Or, better yet, Sthegaslenic? Last edited by sanso; October 31st, 2007 at 20:12. |

Much of the "symptoms" of dyslexia are related to the inability to fit into a 2d world. For example i have no meaning left and right . Also linearity of spelling where letters appear on other sides of each other. such as WEIGHT vs WIEGHT. Or in my case number strings . For example 3568 looks exactly like 3658 in some situatons. And for example i had terrible dificulty in word order when learning to read, but my brain now sorts out the problems and understands what is meant vs what is percieved. I do read slower than most, but i still love to read. But for every time that we are unable to fit into your 2d world we have wonderful gifts of being able to percieve the 3d world much more detailed than you can. For example i do a lot of 3d modeling of very complicated protein structures. With this i can freely rotate very complicated structures in my head while "Normal" people cannot even grasp what i am doing, often even with the use of a computer. The only other person i know who can do these 3d manipulations also has Dyslexia as well. Also for example in video games dyslexic people can accel in 3d maps beyond 2d ers. When i was being screened they used a 3d map, kind of like a rat race. Dyslexic people generally have no trouble orienting themselves in a 3d map, while "normal" people constantly get lost, mixed up, and frustrated.
These are just two examples of one type of dyslexia. But its not a handicap, unless you need to reliably enter long numbers into a computer. - of which i absolutely cannot do, also dialing a phone takes me about 7 -10 seconds, while i confirm every digit to double check for my mistakes. But as for it being a disability, i know that every person i work with is very envious of my "magical" abilities, and i can do this type of work in fractions of the time it takes them. In conclusion everyone is Dyslexic to some degree, you see, its a continuum of scale. There are "normal" slightly dyslexic people and there are extreme cases that make life difficult. For every loss you have in the 3d world we loose in the 2d and linear world. I like to say " We just dont put much faith in your arbitrary rules" I hope that explains the not very much talked about world of benefits to dyslexia. |

Hey, a modeler!
sciencemike, Thanks for the explanation. I'm interested in what systems You use to for which tasks, but this is getting off topic. If You'd like to exchange experiences, I'd be happy to read a PM. |
