I can tell you for sure that they could give 2 shits about that crew. 30 tanks for 30 crew members, I think they would sink it and save their dignity then risk losing 30 tanks to african rebels.

Re: pirates seize ship

The British navy killed two Somali pirates, and captured several others, after the attempted hijacking of a Danish cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden.

News | Africa - Reuters.com

The Ukrainian cargo ship loaded with heavy weaponery and 20 members of its crew are still held by pirates. Pirates also hijacked another ship this week - despite heavy international military presence in the area, yesterday they captured a Turkish tanker with 14 crew members on board.

Great article on pirates

There's a great article on pirates in the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/31/wo...tml?ref=africa

It gives a good insight into these modern pirates. I'd also like to mention the fantastic photography by Jehad Nga. I'd love to figure out his technique!

Those Spanish fishermen certainly get around. No wonder the fishermen were getting so worked up to get EU relief on their fuel (didn't one or two Spanish/French fishermen die during the protests?) - sounds like they are travelling great distances. [Wonder if it was the same one that trawled the prime tourist beaches of S. Devon this Summer?]

Alternatively, maybe we need some pirates, I mean privateers, operating from UK shores?

Re: pirates seize ship

Russians send finally a warship - the Neustrashimy. But it is not enough. It is a failed state so either the international community sends enough warships they police waters all the time , which is very unlikely, or they re-build that the state, which is also unlikely given all the failed efforts before.

We already have them, from most countries; they are called "banks" in modern day parlance!

Oh, silly me, I thought they were Bandits.

Shiver me timbers, the Indian Navy blew some pirates up today:

(They've had to deal with pirates before. I met a retired Admiral from the Indian Navy a few years ago, nice chap.)

BTW Spaghetti, is that rather neat looking Italian Navy ship. No doubt hi-tech, hydro-dynamic & made of carbon fibre & finest hardwoods!

The Indian ship is pretty trick looking too though:

It's the HMS XXV Gold, of the Mr. Carbon destroyer class

However there's something dive-related in the ship I posted above. The ship is named to Luigi de la Penne, a brave WWII naval diver. He was an officer of the legendary italian Gamma men, or "Frogmen".
In particular, he made a perilous dive into the Alexandria Harbour and sunk the british warships Queen Elizabeth and Valiant, by placing timebombs under the keel. Unfortunately, Italy was on the wrong side in that war, and of course I'm happy that the Allied won. Anyway, De La Penne was a loyal officer but not a fascist. Indeed, after the fall of the italian fascist regime in 1943, De La Penne was asked to join the allied front and accepted, therefore he accomplished more brave actions with a british-italian mixed force of naval divers.
A truly legendary person in diving history:

Re: pirates seize ship

As we see this thread is descending into Argghh and Shiver mi timbers.. This is one of the fundamental problems with modern piracy is everybody thinks of Jack Sparrow and the whole Hollywood romantic portrayal of them.

Pirates are bastards who kill people like my self and my wife for commercial gain. They are well funded and normally have members in high government places making prosecution difficult and pointless.

Give me a Dillon, a few packs of ammo and every pirate in the world..

Re: pirates seize ship

They were always like that. The only difference nowadays is technological improvements. It's like the Hollywood romanticizing of cat burglars as really cool, when in fact they are sick, sick people.
