The wife and I are planning a big trip around bits of Europe in Aug/Sept this year. The first trip we are looking at will end in either Split or Dubrovnik in Croatia. A couple of days later the second trip will start in St Petersburg. It seems that flights are outragously expensive, and I haven't had any luck looking at direct trains so far, so does anyone know of a good, relatively cheap way of getting from Croatia to St Petersburg?
Cheers, Ben

I don't think there are direct trains from Croatia to Russia - most folks fly - in summer - Russian travel agencies organize charter flights to Croatia and, if you book your ticket in advance, you might be able to get a flight at a decent price. One company that has been organizing such flights is Международный туроператор Асент Трэвел
Alternatively, you can try find a cheap ticket to Austria and then take a train to Moscow - it take less than 3 days and it used to be at least 30 percent cheaper than air ticket. Did you get a Russian visa yet? It is a real hassle for folks who travel individually rather than thru travel agencies, etc |

Thanks for your help guys. The train looked like a nightmare so the other option we thought of was to fly to Helsinki and catch a train or ferry from there, but that ended up just as expensive and the times were a bit nasty too. So in the end we opted for the direct flight from Dubrovnik (via Vienna). Not the cheapest but at least we'll get there in time for our trip.
My wife has now planned a complete itinery for the Croatia leg so i'll be lucky if I have time to scratch myself now! Can't wait.... Cheerio, Ben
