re-surface equilzation

hello im getting better and better at going deeper but i have no problem equilzing on the way down but what about going up? i watch other people diving and freediving and they seem to do nothing on the way up. i feal a slight tighting in my inner ear when i resurface, nothing painful. is this normal? once im at the surface i swallow and everything is fine and im redy to dive again. is this what is suppose to happen? or should i try and stop before comming up and re equlize, i see guys freedive real deep like 100 ft and just come up as fast as going down.

Re: re-surface equilzation

You should not need to do anything on the way up, your ears should equalise themselves, and yes it is normal to feel a little pressure as they do. I also have to open my jaw when I get to the surface to completely equalise. Some scuba divers wonder about getting a reverse block, where their ears do not equalise on the way up, which can lead to perforation; this is not usually a problem in freediving, as dive times are not long enough for a block to form. If you do start to feel pain on the way up, slow down your ascent and try some jaw stretches to relieve the pressure. You should never force an equalisation. If it takes more effort than usual, abort the dive and wait a few minutes before trying again, and go slowly.

Re: re-surface equilzation

I'm not scuba diver but today I experienced quite nasty reverse block of my sinuses.
I was able equalize when going down very slowly, but when ascending I had to go even slower otherwise the pain was bad. I tried it several times (everytime ended only at three meters) and called it a day.
Now I took some medicine and hope to be OK for tomorrow dive.

Well - but normally I don't have to do anything while ascending, no matter how fast I go.

Re: re-surface equilzation

I had problems when I was a teen with reverse block and did perforate a ear drum coming up from a deep dive. Come to find out that my eustation tube passage was blocked by the lymph node or at least that's what they told me back in 1970. They also told me never to dive again past 3 feet and i did listen to take a year off to let things heal but have continued to dive and now free dive often to 30m plus with no problems. The problem with reverse block use to make my assents painfully slow, but looking at the new vs old assent speeds it would now be normal assent rate. I would think it would be smart to see a good ear/throat Doc and just check it out, I wished I had!
Good luck
