Re: vibrating snorkel +

With all the "vibrating" going on and everything else...I'll just shut up!

However the "great shovel hands" thing kinda got me a bit excited!!!

You'd have no need for fins with hands like that!

Re: vibrating snorkel +

Try to attach the snorkel at the back of your head and cut it shorter. Check photo below. I've seen a lot of uw hockey players wearing it like that and, when it comes to snorkels, they would know a good vibe from a bad one...
Cheers,

Virgil

Re: vibrating snorkel +

such small detail, but so many opinions. I used to keep it under my mask strap, but started loosing them on the way in and out of the water. I now use a regular clippy thing that comes with the snorkel (clippy thing being the exact technical term, write it down to impress friends).

the biggest reason to use the clippy thing was a breathe up technique I learnt in a level II course: face down in the water, breathing through snorkel, remove mask (i put it up on my forehead) and relax. The cold fresh water around the eyes and forehead stimulate a good and early dive response. I do this for 2 to 5 mins (depending on how cold and numbing the water is) breathing very slowly and trying to relax every muscle. I swear that the first dive of the day after using this technique is as good as the 10th to 15th dive without.. hope i explained ok???

Cheers

Re: vibrating snorkel +

Tried out some of the ideas from here in pool today. Summary:

1. Used the "clippy thing" (Figure 8 rubber gasket thing that everybody knows), and the snorkel vibrated WORSE. It was bad.

2. Went back to the built-in clip and by playing with attachment location could get the vibrations down to an OK level. Not perfect, but acceptable. [FYI: the snorkel is an Omer Zoom Pro and the clip is permanently adhered to the tube; don't see any way to get it off, so have to work around it]

3. Then I tried the "swim free" approach mentioned above by Dennis77. I was skeptical at first, but I kept working with it and Bingo, I figured it out. I could keep it behind my ear and sometimes pin it between my head and my shoulder (or just let it rest on my shoulder) if going fast. I might try some insulation foam or neoprene to help with the bouyancy (it's negative now). That might also keep it up-pointing when at on the surface.

Little stuff, but fascinating nonetheless.

Thanks guys.

Re: vibrating snorkel +

HJ, sounds nice.

I was very skeptical, as I´ve been told to try it that way. But even one day with quite rough water off the coast of Sharm el Sheikh it worked perfect. Get used to it, and you´ll love it.

Re: vibrating snorkel +

just tuck it in to your weight belt. completly secure and out of the way, and when you need it just pull it out and put it in your mouth.

Re: vibrating snorkel +

Good idea about the weight belt, but not sure if I'll have one. Tried some variations at the pool today. I found an old piece of neoprene/velcro wrap (see photod). I just wrapped it around the tube, trying different positions. Also secured it a little more with rubber bands. This worked quite well and accomplished two things: (1) gave the snorkel positive buoyancy (it was negative without), and (2) gave the tube more of an upright position at the surface no matter what my head was doing. All in all, I like this idea. "swim free, oh snorkel, swim free"

I also tried descending and holding the snorkel in my hands in front. Works but kind of awkward. Maybe the belt idea is better.

Thanks for good suggestions!

Re: vibrating snorkel +

I'll try the floating snorkel at the lake this afternoon... it seem like a great idea, and one less thing to keep in mind durring breath ups.
