Jonta,
hi and welcome to DeeperBlue for a start. ![]() The first thing You need is a buddy. Don't play with this alone. If You don't have a buddy, then You don't dive. As for lead, that is very hard to decide. It's unlikely that any of your current problems will be solved by adding lead, so I'd say no need for it yet, if ever. Take a look at the thread on How to start freediving in this section of the forum. That will answer some questions, raise even more and likely answer those as well - at least partly. Have fun and enjoy the ride, but stay safe! Sanso |

Hi Jonta, welcome to DB!
I agree with Sanso, find a able buddy! For deep diving, without suit, one does not need any weights. Practice your duckdive, you'll be amazed how much you can improve on it, saving much energy and getting deeper by just improving your technique. It's a great journey, and it's even better when you can share it with an able buddy! Buddy, Courage and water, Kars

The weight issue is very individual. Ask 10 people and You get 20 different versions of "works for me". You'll just have to find out whatever works for You. |

Well Sanso, indeed 10 different awsers are possible, but not all of them are likely
These days I can take a lot of air with me, I guess arround 6,5 - 7Liters and at the surface I'm 3kg boyand. If I where to dive without suit to 10m and I would go full lungs, I would not need any weight(s). I would make one good duckdive, two strokes and glide the rest slowly down and find myself just slightly negative or about nutral (not floating up). Good enough for watching wildlife, experiencing the pressure, relaxing, enjoying the light etc. Perhabs If I were hunting I would like to have one or two kilo's of weight, to make ik really easy to get down and duck behind some cover to catch some fish. But going up would be heavier, especially with short or no fins (could even be scary !). One of the first freedives I did was with an scuba suit on and plenty of weight. I went down in the med to about 7m and find myself for the first time Negativly boyand! It was a scary, "oh shit" experience. With my big open heeled fins I could push through, but at the surface it was like, I have to much weight!. I whore a 7mm suit with 6kg of weights diving with my brother. In general for practising I recommend NO weights, even with a suit. Than you'll become really good and efficient in duckdiving and waterentry in general. But offcause your buddy can comment on your technique and results too Buddy, courage and water, Kars

Try it. That will take less time than thinking about it and posting/reading here. - And it's more fun!

I don't believe you can simply equate your dynamic time from static times. Simply put, it differs from person to person. I personally suck at dynamic with fins. For me, when I had a 2 and 1 half min hold, I do remember doing that 50m swim I was talking about above. Right now my holds have doubled, but my dynamic with fins hasn't gotten better. It might even be getting worse. Dynamic without fins is another story.
Cheers. |

To give you an idea of how much it can vary with training, I haven't been able to swim (no matter how slow) for 25% of my static best. Without a pool I just don't train dynamic.

Hi Jonta
Which static excersizes are you doing right now? I am also still very new to this form, and I travelling a lot, so don't really have time to search for adequete excercizes on all posts. Thanks Corneil |
