Re: Problem with monofinning

Blade stiffness and angle play a deciding role in whether a kick glide technique is appropriate and efficient.

Filming is always good to review your technique. Peter P has an online service where you can send him your videos, he reviews them and then corrects you, for a price.

Re: Problem with monofinning

Hi,

search youtube with the words freediving mullins
you will find his 244m dive there:

you can see the kick and glide technik there.
but imho you will have to try if you get along with it, or better with the technik in the video of kristofferson in this thread (or anyway in between)
i startet with the kristofferson technik of continously strokes and now i am somewhere between the techniks. my technik has changed with the time, and i hope i will end somewhere near the kick and glide technik of dave mullins.

when i started i needed a lot of strokes for the same distance. with the time, the technik gets better and now i need much less strokes, the same will happen to you.

if there is any finswimming club near to you i think it would be a good idea to learn some technik there. i am also looking for a finswimming club where i can improve my technik,

greetings
marc

Re: Problem with monofinning

Thanks Marc!

There seems to be great variation in techinques. Mullins looks slow and relaxed although he did do continuous strokes at the end.........I suppose to cover more distance? Pedersen's seems to be very fast strokes. Is it a matter of personal preference?

I noticed in Mullins clip that he finished all 5 laps of 50m but why was it considered a 244m swim?

Looking at that clip, I'd have thought you had gills behind your ears or something...

Re: Problem with monofinning

Sorry, more questions :
I'm using a stiff blade but tried my friend softer monofin today. It feels very different and easier to fin. How should the techniques vary when using soft vs stiff fins? I'm using Leaderfins.

Re: Problem with monofinning

For Beginners who are not strong I recomment a soft fin. Because it's easyer to bend, it's easyer to keep the legs straid and use the back.

I use mainly small scuba fins to practice strenght, technique, flex etc.

Re: Problem with monofinning

Mmm.......drats, I thought so. When I first took my fins out, I felt myself bending my knees too much to deal with the stiffness of the fins. With softer fins, I don't have that problem. It's getting better though.....I just need to build up leg strength. I been training monofin kick with my scuba short fins for awhile but switching to monofin felt very different.
