Lucaso balanced
Speargun for panfish/carp

Hey everyone,

This is Lucaso, new guy to the diving world, the UW hunting world, and these forums. Anyway, I'm hoping to do some spearing for both panfish and carp in central Wisconsin. My question is whether anyone can recommend a speargun that will be powerful enough for the latter, yet not overkill for the former (if such a gun exists). From what my limited knowledge gathering indicates, it seems that this could require simply changing out the band(s). Oh, and most importantly, I'm still a cheap college student, so feel free to focus on the sub-$100 options. Thanks a lot for any help.

Lucaso

Re: Speargun for panfish/carp

Lucaso -

Not sure if you'd be into it or not - but I myself PREFER a polespear over a speargun. I also prefer a muzzle loader or a stick bow for hunting on land - I guess I'm into the more primitive forms of hunting.

I too am fairly new to UW hunting but I've harvested hundreds of nice panfish with a polespear and a few carp, gar, and dogfish too. A large carp can TAKE your polespear from you though...Some guys hook thier polespears up to thier float with some float line when going for monster carp. A slip-tip type head would be best for large carp whereas a "three prong" type head is best for panfish by far. Some guys even use the "three prong" on thier spear-gun shafts too!

Hope this helps you ou Lucaso. Tell us of your future UW adventures!

Re: Speargun for panfish/carp

Lucaso - it will be hard to find a decent speargun that Shoots "far" enough for under $100. but it's possible with ebay - as far as the bands you don't have to use all of them all the time- I have a 3 band JBL WOODY - Which is Great for carp! Goes threw them instead of in them and then pull out when they swim away. But that will cost about $175 new at Buy scuba gear, scuba diving and snorkeling equipment, and everything underwater from LeisurePro.com If I'm soley going for pan fish- I'll throw on my trident spear tip and use 1 band- 2 if I need to shoot farther.
