A new generation arrives!

Aloha Guys,

Just got back from an epic dive trip this weekend. The weather was nice, water pretty clear and lots of fish. Many of you have kids and hope you enjoy the dive report. I can remember when I first started diving wih my dad over 40 years ago.

What made this trip special as most of the Molokai trips are is that like last week, we had another father son dive team on board. Last weekend we had Kaipo and his son Troy and this weekend we had Ron and his son Ryan. Troy and Ryan are friends but Kaipo is on a trip so they couldn't make it this weekend. It would have been even more fun with the two boys and their dads.

Ryan has never been on a boat for this long a trip and like Troy last week, it was with reservations not knowing how it would be. I suggested this weekend since it was similar to last weekend weather wise.
Ron is the perfect dad. It was fun to see the two interact and how Ryan listened with the utmost attention to everything his dad and uncles would explain him to do or why he should be careful on the boat.

It was epic in that Ryan got to shoot his new hybrid and got his first fish and then fishes with the gun. He had NO help other than dad watching over him like a hawk. I watched Ryan for a little bit and he can dive. He has the makings of something special. Like one of my good friends, he has that innate hunters instinct and has the tracking and shooting fish down pretty good. Shooting fish isn't easy as Daddy can attest to, but Ryan has that down. It is just a matter of time and maturity that will make him grow into a future champion possibly in this new found sport. As he gets bigger, stronger and wiser, he'll be out diving, out shooting all his uncles.

In Hawaii we use the term " uncles" which is what we consider ourselves to young kids and here young kids call any elders not related to them Uncle or Aunty out of respect. Is more casual than using Mr. or Mrs. when addressing adults.

Ryan also got to reel in his first big fish. He learned how to put out the lures and to check that the hook is the right way and then how the reels sounds as a 25lb Ono screams the line off. He also watched his uncle bring in the fish and lose a fish, although that wasn't planned. We thought it was a slipper. (inside joke)
These are things that he will remember a long time. We were all proud of him with his maturity, enthusiasm and happy for his Dad who now has a life long dive partner.

Uncle Joe Strona helped him with tips on reeling in fish, Uncle Claude who hasn't come out in a while showed how NOT to be seasick which was epic in itself, and Uncle David provided his wit and good humor. Uncle Daryl showed how to spear fish. hahaha Just kidding.
Of course all the uncles showed that they could also shoot a few fish too. The main thing, everyone had a blast and now there are two young men Troy and Ryan who can be future dive partners and partners for Kaipo and Ron to enjoy for the next few decades.

I have had the opportunity to meet a few young men such as Ryan and Troy and later will meet another named AJ in Florida who is the same age in a few weeks. Its nice to know our sport has young sportsmen like them to carry on the torch.

Here are a few pictures of the young men and from this weekend. Many of my friends have young boys and girls and I hope you one day enjoy them as much as my two friends did the last two weekends. Hope to see you all here one day to dive. Bring your kids they are always welcome.

Lets hear some Dads stories.

Aloha,Daryl

Nice! As always Daryl, great story and great looking waters in the background of your pics! Even if they're not your own kids, it always fun to see them discover something and have fun with it.
