Hey guys, just a reminder, whether you agree or not with a person we don't engage in personal attacks on DB.

I guess this is slightly off the La Jolla topic, but a guy diving from my boat saw an 18 footer at Farnsworth Bank on the back side of Catalina last week.

Lots of close calls in my Mares, you know. Not all shark related, either. I surfaced near a rookery one time, and pulled myself up on the rocks. I lay there tired and motionless on my stomach for just a bit too long. Did you know that male sea lions can weigh up to 2,100 lbs or more, and don't return phone calls?

Can you make a photo like that but with my wife's face and a caption that reads, "Does this wetsuit make my ass look big?"

Amen Miles, if the GWS are so harmless, why does the scientists always film them behind bars??? that is so totally contradictory about their original statements ... like, they dont eat people, they eat seals instead, they are not that kkiling machines bla bla bla, and then they film behind bars ... who believes them???Regards |

Double Amen Miles! I get really tired of the shark-huggers who say they were here first, its OK if they eat us because its natural, etc.
Its fine with me if they eat you as long as you are good with it, but I would just as soon pass. My dive buddy who saw that 18 footer at Catalina recently is still trying to clean his wetsuit, and I'm still trying to clean the swimstep where he came aboard. A friend was appoached by a commercial boat at another spot at Catalina last week and the guy said his friend was run out of the water the day before. He also said that thay had regularly seen three different sharks at the site recently, one of them with a spear sticking out of his mouth. I might be skeptical about the spear if I didn't know a guy who was diving there a couple of years ago and dove down on a school of yellowtail. As he lined up a shot, the yellowtail parted and a big gws came at him full speed with mouth open and he shot it in the face. It veered by him and took his gun, float, etc, but with his blessing. Ask him if the sharks mean us no harm. BTW, I guess the shark just considers the shaft to be a toothpick.

I agree with Bill and Miles in the fact that the GWS is a killing machine with only two reasons to swim, that is eating and breeding, and since they probably are not gona buzz you as a prospective mate you are probably looked at as DINNER.
We do have to remember though that this is just one very slim danger we face in a sport full of dangers. Use your senses and be safe! Joel |
