well you already found my thread so you know im in the area.. i am getting my stuff this week, and plan on going out the day i receive it. (im new to the sport).. ive been reading for about 2 weeks on the subject though, and have been rod/reel fishing and freediving for quite some time.

anyway, i am ideally looking for the same types of dives. typically crystal cove, laguna, etc.. so let me know if you go out anytime soon!

Re: newport beach, ca area

we need to start a socal thread.. to keep track of all the locals (SD/OC/LA)

i have seen quite a few, and maybe we could start a multiple page thread that is specifically for trips, meeting up, discussing specific hunting spots, tips and tricks, etc.

where would we make such a thread?

Crystal Cove is great for scuba and snorkeling but is totally closed to hunting. That spot is heavily patrolled. Just South there are some good spots though. So you have no spearing experience at all?

oh alright, yeah i was figuring crystal cove might be off limits, since it is pretty heavily populated with all kinds of families and whatnot.

no spearing experience yet.. i have a friend who talked me into gearing up and getting into the sport.. so i plan on going with him for a few times before meeting up with anyone on the boards (so i dont look like a complete idiot)

living 5 minutes off the sand and having alot of freetime though, i plan on gaining lots of experience this summer and following seasons.

Re: newport beach, ca area

it's not the families, but rather the fact that it is a State Park. You can go guerilla but I don't condone that type of stuff *hehehe*. I heard it is real FISHY there, but again, I don't suggest even trying it there. Just remember that I only hunt to eat so if you are looking to gain target practice, then you might want to find another sport. Fish grow slowly in the ocean and once they are gone, chances are that the next big one is not gonna come real soon. It is better to be smart than destructive...hunt with professionalism and you will gain knowledge well beyond your experience level.

well luckily, as i said before, i have been rod/reel fishing almost all my life.. so ive gained a great respect for the sport of fishing in general. i too am a firm believer in only catch to eat, and i realize in this sport that "catch and release" is not an option, thus i will only be shooting to kill and eat the fish.. hence the halibut AV i found haha. i would only be shooting regulation-sized fish, also. likely corbina, halibut, bass, etc.

and yeah i wouldnt hunt crystal cove in that case, much too risky and im sure the fines would be hefty.. besides, why risk it when you can just go a few minutes south to laguna and probably find similar conditions?

yeah im used to a faster-paced message board so maybe thats why i post alot lol.. and i guess more activity from a few members turns into more activity all around.

your plan sounds like alot of fun im not sure where victoria is off the top of my head.. but the environment sounds cool. hopefully ill have my stuff by then and can come check it out or something

Re: newport beach, ca area

Victoria is good to the right of the stairs and when the swell is down. It dies get a little surgy though. However, if you head all the way to the left (Condos with glass partitions), it gets real reefy there and the surge is minimal because of the lack of sand. Again, as long as the swell stays down, and the viz is good, you can always run into something worth interest. I heard the viz is great right now....especially North near Malibu area. This weekend is ON FOR SURE.

Re: newport beach, ca area

matesz - i would definitely be interested in catalina after i get at least 5-10 sessions in before then, so i feel more comfortable and find my technique.

kanakafari - if you do hit victoria or go all the way to the left (im thinking thats where i was yesterday if you see the other thread).. which day would you be going? i should have my stuff today or tomorrow so i might go down there either tomorrow or friday.
