Re: newport beach, ca area

Does anybody want to head out this weekend? There's a couple of spots I would like to check out. I'm also open to other spots. The vis wasn't too bad today. Some spots were clear while others hazy. Water is getting colder

I hear on Spearboard the vis can be 20 -30' in some areas. Looking great out there. Im still feeling under the weather, but i picked up the weights i needed and another snorkel from the accident.

Re: newport beach, ca area

Conditions were great this morning. Vis was ~20ft. Barely any surges or waves. Saw plenty of worthy calicos and bulls. I was only going for bugs this morning so I left them alone. I grabbed 3 bugs, but 1 was on the dot, so I let it go. I'll be enjoying the other two tonight.

I hope you're feeling better, Mike. I wanna go back on Friday. Possibly checking out the caves for more bugs. It seems like the good conditions are drawing them in.

Re: newport beach, ca area

Yeah that sounds good. I think i can go on friday. Im definately feeling better. I hit the pool yesterday and did a set of 8 dynamics of 150 feet with barely even feeling the need to breath and without a single contraction.

BTW i have never seen any bugs ever at the caves. So we might go to cactus garden outside?

Re: newport beach, ca area

We hit the rocks off of Brooks St on Tues and viz was pretty poor; we were an hour or two short of low tide so that probably had something to do with it. This could be a question of ignorance/lack of experience but have you guys noticed a tide vs viz correlation?

Re: newport beach, ca area

A lifeguard had told us that outgoing tide tends to kick up the sand, hence poor viz. Join us for tomorrow, iclypso. Conditions look great.

I'm having trouble getting up to work on time after the morning dive. What do you guys say we start a bit earlier? Maybe meeting at 7 instead of 7:30?

Re: newport beach, ca area

I guess thats really directed at me isn't it dam. After all im always late to these morning things. 7 am sounds early but good. BTW i now dont use a mask anymore. For the 20-35 foot stuff we usually do im going to stick with my low profile goggles i have been using in training.

Re: newport beach, ca area

Mike, here's my experience with diving without snorkels. It felt great during the dives. But, I noticed that I wasn't as relaxed during the surface time. I was doing unnecessary movements (turning to side to breathe) when lying face down and losing sight of the bottom when when lying face up. You can give it a try and let me know how it works out for you.

Re: newport beach, ca area

We go at least every friday. We sometimes go monday or Wednesday, or saturday or Sunday, as well as friday.

We meet at Reef Point @ 7am. We dive anywhere from 35 foot deep to 10 foot deep depending upon the conditions. Come on out and join us.

Today there was 30+ foot of visibility before the rains really kicked in. It was like an aquarium... I got a very nice Sand Bass with my polespear, and dam as always got a keeper bug.

Wow vis that good? I have only been to reef point a couple of times and both times the surge was bad and vis was horrible. How long do you guys dive for? If I could be out of the water by 8:30 I would love to come unless of course it's a weekend and if that's the case I'm open all day!

Re: newport beach, ca area

Some people are saying the vis was 50'.

I think ~35foot but ill go conservative on the 30foot.

It was beautiful. We moved back in to the inside reef at 8:30. We got out of the water at 9:30. We could get there an extra 15 minutes early so you can get a full dive in.

We have a good buddy system going that would easily accomodate another diver. When we are in 25+ foot of water we watch each other's dives (we surface telling the other whats down there, like 2 lobsters holed up or a large calico.. etc). One up one down. Moving gently between reefs. Because i hunt fish i tend to take the first dive at each reef. But then we come to the shallows ~15' and we each kinda do our own thing. Staying within ~150 foot of each other, checking on each other from time to time.

As for diving...The rivers are all dumping into the ocean. So i wont dive for a week. And that massive swell is gonna hit on Tuesday. 15-18 foot waves. So there goes your visibility. Maybe next friday or the week after that.

Sounds like a good buddy system and your not beyond my dive ability so I guess i'll have to put it on hold for a week or so. thanks for the info and i'll keep an eye on this post for next week.
