I HAVE NEVER BEEN DIZZY AFTER I GET BACK FROM DIVING BUT IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE YOU ARE DEHYDRATED. THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DEHYDRATION. I KNOW THAT I GET DIZZY WHEN I HAVENT HAD ENOUGH FLUIDS. IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN DRINKING WATER ENOUGH THEN I HAVE NO CLUE WHATS WRONG SORRY.

Re: newport beach, ca area

From what I gather from the regs is your allowed to take any legal finfish and lobsters when in season, just no other sealife ie mollusks, shellfish, shells, sea plants etc. I'll check them one more time but I've hunted down there and recieved a "nice fish" from the ranger, and that was that.

Re: newport beach, ca area

"Lifeguards have the authority to ask you to move if you are spearfishing in an area where there are a lot of swimmers. Spearfishing can be considered a hazardous activity.

Crystal Cove State Park (949-494-3539) asks that spear fishermen adhere to all Fish and Game laws - which they strictly enforce. They also ask that you take time to familiarize yourself with the size, take and season limitations for any specific species you are pursuing. Please also exercise the good conservation ethic that all of us spear fisherman adhere to. Take only what you need. If size is in question, before pulling the trigger, it's better to let it swim away.
The following fish may be caught in the Laguna Beach Marine Protected Area: rockfish, greenling, lingcod, cabezon, yellowtail, mackerel, bluefin tuna, kelp bass, spotted sand bass, barred sand bass, sargo, croaker, queenfish, corbina, white seabass, opaleye, halfmoon, surfperch, blacksmith, barracuda, sheephead, bonito, halibut, sole, turbot and sanddab. All other marine life species are prohibited and nothing can be taken from the intertidal area."

Re: newport beach, ca area

well said about Crystal Cove.....it is better to walk away unless you are certain that you are within regs. When in doubt, bone the f**k out. Play it safe, let the place grow untouched for others to enjoy....it is only fair. To spear to the point where there is no respect for others is selfish in my opinion. Spear somwhere else. Be humane in your inhumanity is the best logic.

whazzup aesthetics? what happened to you this weekend? Best rule of thumb is to let me or beam know by Friday if you are gonna make it or not. I don't dive with people that take honor in taking bat rays however. There is no honor in such plumfoolery. In fact, it is idiotic to shoot something to just shoot it. They are not meant for eating, they are harmless and contribute to the complexity of the ocean so simply put....why? You tell your buddy MateszH20 that him and his little girlfriend that likes to shoot bats is banned from our group. I have lost a good amount of respect for MateszH20 for even applauding, not to mention, mentioning such a feat. If we hook up Mates....leave the numbnutz at home. They are not only irresponsible, but dangerous to themselves and those diving around them. Aesthetic.....PM me and I'll give you our contact info. Please tell me you weren't part of the bat ray incident i've been hearing about. I would be greatly dissapointed in you as well.

You missed a good trip to PV with me and beam. Caught a crapload of fish, but the only drawback is that my feet are embedded with dozens of urchin spines and my ankles have been swelling over the past few days.

Re: newport beach, ca area

Aesthetic,

Looks like a nice corbina, and sounds like you had a nice dive.

one question though, when did Bat Rays become a target species? I know that in Mexico they will serve up sting rays as a poor mans scallop. I guess to each there own but I prefer to admire bat rays for there gracefull flight than to target them. Its a big ocean out there with plenty of game fish. But i guess thats just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. I second the thoughts of Kanak, I guess that is why we dive together though.

The creatures that we choose to use as a food source should be treated with as much respect a possable and not stabbed multable times with a knife like a pin coushion and disrespected. I guess if that is all someone has the skill to hunt they should change sports, try bowling.

good luck

joel

Re: newport beach, ca area

I dont see any issue in shooting sharks nor ray's. But judging from those posted pictures that meat looks kinda nasty. From what friends and the DFG says, leapord's taste alot like salmon. Just bleed and gut them asap and you wont get a mouthful of ammonia tasting rubbery fish. This is probably opening the proverbial can of worms. woops. =D

Re: newport beach, ca area

guys first of all i dont respect the harasment for the catch. they are legal to catch and it was legal size and if i use all the meat on it then why is it so bad. i would understand if you where pissed at me for catching it just for shits. but i carved up as much meat as i could get off of it. second of all i didnt stab it up for shits and giggles. i shot it strieght in the head and it was still struggling so i dove down to try and put it out of its missery. i put my knife into its head 2 times and it was still moving so i tried cutting its gills cuz that kills it instantly. but it was still moving. even after i brought it back home and carved it up the wings where flapping while off the body so its nerves where ticking and its my bad i just throught it was still alive. second of all you shouldnt be talking if you have never eaten ray. im just really dissapointed in all of you that would put down someone that respects the ocean and doesnt pointlessly kill fish. like i said above i would be right along with you if i wasnt going to eat the meat. but i plan on having dinner with friends later on tonight. there is an abundance of bat rays from oregon to the california baja. so dont start saying that they are endangered cuz they are not. i havent eaten leopard cuz i think that they are to beautiful to kill. i have eaten shark once befor and i know that it is really good meat. so i expect rays to be aswell. if you guys dont want to dive with me thats fine. but i wasnt going to pass up a deliciouse meal like that when i see it. now lets not get a debat on if it is ok to kill rays i was just giving my defence. lets keep talking about dive trips and such cuz thats what this thread is about right?

Re: newport beach, ca area

No harassment from me, just thought the meat looked funky is all. Lord know's I've been tempted to apply tempered steel to them a few times myself. I'd be interested in how you prepared it and what your thoughts are on weather you would take one again. Also if you can make a note of where the "best" meat came from off of it.

Is everyone fairly expirienced on here or just starting out? Hope no one takes offense to the question but it's nice to know fellow diver's water expirience. I've been freediving and H&L kayak fishing the area for about 5 years now.

Re: newport beach, ca area

I have spent plenty time in Mexico guy. Down by the Sea of Cortez you can find mantaraya at every taco stand there. So don;t try to knock those that you think neva' tried it. This supposed to be about diving but when your fellow threaders hear about senseless killing, that is simply upsetting. I heard nothing about endangerement, did you? Just because there are pletny of them that make it ok right? There are plenty of dipshits in the world so we should just kill them too right? No worries. It's about respect and in time you will learn and understand why this is such a touchy subject....nuff said.
