palos verde question

was out by old Marine land yesterday and decided to head up the coast a bit and stopped at Point Vicente Fishing Acess the cove was nice and sheltered from the little bit of swell that was out there. As I maded my way down the trail I noticed a No Taking of Marine life sign. Is it a NO HUNTING AREA?

any help would be great

thanks

Joel

Re: palos verde question

I don't believe so. I think it means you can't take anything other than with a valid fishing license- things like sea stars, etc. that beach combers or tidepoolers might take. The name of the parking lot "...Fishing Access" seems to imply this.

Re: palos verde question

Haven't taken up hunting yet, but I did dive that location three times in the past month. I really enjoy it although the entry and exit can be a bit exciting.

Re: palos verde question

There are a whole collection of areas up and down the CalCoast that are so labeled. Jimq is correct. The "no taking" refers to the marine life in the tide pools and what is basically accessible by beachcombers. Casting out from shore or going out there yourself for finfish and legal crustaceans is perfectly legal.

This is not necessarily known by the the casual sunbather so eiather ignore the teeny-boppers or break out your copy of the fishing regs and do a little impromptu educating. Who knows? You might meet someone worth knowing . . .

Re: palos verde question

sarge,
thanks for the insite, I dive often around laguna and south and I run into the same signs down there, nice to know that they have the same meaning.

joel.

P.S. JimQ, thanks for the heads up on the entry.

Re: palos verde question

I've been entering just north (west?) of the big rock outcrop at the end of the "goat trail" (go straight at the main trail switchback). High tide was easier than low tide. At low tide a lot of water sucked through the arch in the rock, making it a little trickier.

It might be easier to just go in in the middle of the cove where the main trail ends. Depending on the wave direction it might get some protection from the south point or the wash rocks. At the very least you're coming in onto smaller, rounded rocks rather than bigger, sharper rocks.

All good fun though.

PS- the easiest entry was off a boat. But I got seasick so I think I like the rocks better.

Re: palos verde question

JimQ,

Thanks for the entry advise, I know that you mentioned that you have not done any hunting there but how is the fish population? I will be diving there this coming sat morning and was kinda curious?

Thanks for the advise,

Joel
