Northern California Spearfishing pics and vid

Wanted to give the underwater camera a try so I decided to shoot some video and pictures instead of the gun (broken wishbone anyway). Brought the pole spear just because and while looking through the shallows I happened upon this big girl. Could not resist trying out the polespear for what would be my largest cabazone to date (as well as the first real fish I have ever taken with a polespear). Went over 24" and 7lbs gut and gilled. Had a large ab in her stomach along with a few small crabs, so I'm sure she would have crested 9lbs.
Brought the girlfriend along and she is just getting used to the ocean and the very cold water we have in Northern California.
What a beautiful weekend on the coast.
The fish was delicious.

Great video, I have never seen anything like that in my limited shore dives. Vis is amazing!

Pretty stuff. I'm glad you posted it here too, as I had meant to watch on SB, but now SB is down.

Great viedo. Nice cab.
Thats hunting in Norhtern California when the ocean is calm. The black fish are called blue rockfish and are the bread and butter rockfish for Norhtern California. The ones with some white are called balck rockfish and the black and yellow fish is called a black and yellow rockfish. the shellfish are Red Abalone. All that is missing is a great big lingcod.

Thanks for the info. Can you shoot and eat those fish? I have never been diving and seen that many large fish at once. Seems almost too easy if they swim right up to you and there are that many of them.

Re: Northern California Spearfishing pics and vid

Blue, black rockfish are great tasting fish. They are not hard to hunt but finding a good crop of them can be difficult. The poor visibility and heavy swell make the day the video was taken very rare.
On a good day 5' of visibility is what can be expected, which makes hunting especially difficult.

Re: Northern California Spearfishing pics and vid

Take a look at the post average hunt in my paradise spot. Those are blue rockfish. i have this spot that is loaded with fish 30' vis when calm. Where i dive there is a constant school of 30 small blues 7" following me around and the big 15 to 17" fish if you are stealthy you can get all you want. If you are not stealthy dont use a pole spear use a spear gun and you can still get all you want.
I went diving Sunday and it was to rough to get out to the blues so i hunted in more shelthered area and got a mix of blues greenlings black&yellows and striped perch. Then i played hide and seek with a harbour seal for a little bit.
