BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

Anyone interested chime in!! I'm thinking about a winter meet in Prince Rupert! it'll be deep, dark and cold but will still be better then cutting a whole in the ice! if we time it right Ling Cod, Halibut and Rockfish will all be open. I'm willing to organize, but will need to know who's interested.

any information is greatly appreciated:

Charter Boats?
Lodging?
Prize for Biggest Ling Cod?
get some Teeshirts made?

would be a great chance for westcoast freedive spearos to meet and greet. there arn't many of us out here!

Thoughts?

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

Well, if I didn't have to work, I'd be interested . . . after I made a few additional purchases to upgrade my mere 5mm suit! Getting away in the winter, though, is tough. About the only time I could squeeze in might be the week after Christmas and even that's reeaaalllllyyyyyy iffy.

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

Rockfish, Greenling, sole, halibut I believe. No Ling on spear or hook at the south end unfortunately
5 day live-aboard, around 600$ Can. Can't beat it.

I should clarify that the trip I've organised has scubadivers who don't spear, and freedivers who do spear.

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

What kind of water we talking? I am not familair with the area but I am in Portland. I have an 8-7-6 tridensity full hooded one-piece suit. If this is warm enough I might be in for a trip like this. I am a beginner but plan on doing alot of training through the next 6 months.

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

not familiar with that kind of suit. Scuba Suit perhaps? I hated freediving in my old scuba wetsuit. I dive in a 6.5mm Omer, most folks I know have a 5mm suit.

it;s never warm

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

It's an xcel and a great freediving suit. That's what I bought it for. Sounds like it would be perfect for up there. The water is usually about 7-8 degrees here in Oregon and I never get even close to cold. Sounds like it should be OK for up there as well.

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

How about a prize for the biggest fish caught without a wetsuit! You'd have all of 6 minutes to catch the darn thing, then get out of the water fast!

you should offer this to competitors before they dive so it keeps them warm

Re: BC & Alberta Spearfishing Meet!

just curious. I'm from the Fraser Valley but live in the Amazon now. I'm going to Canada for 6 months in 2006 and was curious what sort of depths you need to dive for Rockfish and lingcod.I just freedive. (only for lack of opportunity to learn scuba)I'm not sure that I've been past 7 or 8m. Any chance of seeing nything at these depths?
