The book, Free Diving, is by a pioneer in diving and underwater photography, Dimitri Rebikoff, and was printed in 1956. I collect this sort of diving history.
Until the availability of SCUBA, the diving outlined in the book was done with a hose and a compressor aboard a boat, as in, Hardhat diving. The use of SCUBA was looked at as "freeing" oneself from those burdens. No Abri, the catalog didn't take too well to the cleaning I gave it. sven
