Re: Cornwall 2008.

Just got back from the Lizard.Vis was pretty good and there were plenty of mullet about but the bass were nowhere to be seen.I did see though on the edge of visibility probably the largest fish i've seen.It was either a bass or a mullet but it was huge, easily the length of my gun.Obviously it didn't fancy coming to check me out but god did i pray it would.Having enough of that i moved across to a shallow area thats got a lot of string weed and gave the shallows a try.Almost straight away a mixed group of bass/mullet came by but it was getting so dark it was pretty tricky to see.Came away with a mullet in the end.Saw a baby ray though, which was nice.Got out when it was totally dark cursing my lack of torch.

Re: Cornwall 2008.

I'll never know,it was just visible by its sihlouette. The tail looked mulletish but i just don't know,it was probably 1m in length.Cruising slowy in about 8m and mid water.Last week at the same spot i caught just the slightest glimpse of something large skittering away in the murk, again,a flash of a large tail but that time it was so quick i even doubted whether i imagined it,now i'm thinking maybe i didn't.

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Thought the vis was going to be really good yesterday on the south coast but couldnt get in until after work and the tide was dropping out. I may be wrong but it seems logical that at lower tides the visibility should be worse as all the sediment etc that hasnt flowed out with the tide is compacted into less water ? Or is that a load of rubbish ?

Did see my first cuttlefish though, I`m impressed with their camoflage ability! I never would have seen it if I hadnt gone down to grab a spider and almost picked it up by accident. It let me get about half a foot from it and have a good look before it changed colour and shot off Cheered me up and made up for not getting anything

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Got offshore for a dive yesterday. 50ft viz, and fish everywhere. Here are a couple of videos;

Saw several giltheads, and a couple of big black bream, but only ended up taking bass home. Biggest was a hair under 10lb, but my video camera batteries went flat just before I shot it

cheers
dave

Lovely filming Dave - great. So are you a complete convert on the Pneumatics? Are you coming to Portland on the weekend?

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Had a quick dip at Porthminster tonight, vis was variable but around the 5m mark.Spotted a few bass but all were small,a group of mullet that didn't tempt and very snubbed nosed looking sea trout that i watched for a while.Lots of current made swimming pretty hard and it got dark pretty quick.Swam out to the reef for a quick look but it was getting very dark and stormy and just a little bit spooky so i called it day.

Re: Cornwall 2008.

My PB is now 8lb . An improvement on 7lb taken a couple of years ago.

I know you all love a story so...

Close to the border! ... Local conditions have been cr*p! Have even resorted to surfing again and collecting Lobsters. Viz cleared over the past few days during which I had a couple of smaller Bass and also some lobsters. Then viz ruined yesterday and today. Stubborn as I am went in anyway and straight away dissapointed by the viz. On the bottom about 1m , some patches maybe 2m. Truely fed up with it. I had taken my old gun in with me, no bouy and had just stuck a stringer on the gun handle loop.. just incase!

Crawling around on the bottom I bumped into 2 Bass both around 4lb. Not a chance to pull the gun in close to me to take a shot. I then took to quiet dives into the weed, waiting for one to come in. No joy so took to diving , hiding, recovering. Finning back to my get in after about 100m of trying to hunt in the poor viz I took a dive down in to a clump of weed and almost landed on a large Wrasse!.. I surfaced finned forward and took another dive and hid in a clump of weed that gave me a narrow view. A fish swam in from the side, but as I waited expecting it to be a wrasse again It dawned that I was looking at a good sized Bass.

Hit the fish threw the gill! , with my old 75cm Comanche (standard rubbers on the 2nd notch), No Bouy, No reel, No Bungee!! I finned like mad after it not daring to drop the gun as I reckon I would have lost it. I was wishing I had my other gun with reel or my bouy. As it got the line tangled in the weed I took it by the gill. Got it on my stringer for insurance and then still holding it by the gill finned my way to my get in, so stoked to have a fish that looked like it would beat my pb. Maybe I should of continued hunting, but i felt like I'd got what I came for. I was in for less than an hour.

Bang on 8lb (I had decided not to gut or scale it till I weighed it!!). My wife has said well done! , but think she misses the importance of this day for me.

cheers all!!
if the viz is cra* , maybe you should go in anyway
