Had a low water dive around the Dodman this afternoon. Was going to go to Hemmick but conditions were pretty bad. Ended up around the corner at Vault which was only just sheltered from the wind and swell. Vis was patchy but up to 4m at times. Not much around though - in fact it was fairly disapointing on the fish front. Plenty of pollack and more than the odd bass but nothing of any size. Saw a few reasonable mullet but they weren't hanging around for target practice. I picked off a couple of the larger fish for dinner later in the week.
Still a good dive though considering the change in wind direction, but to be honest the conditions looked much better around Pentewen. It's gonna be difficult to pick out some decent dive spots over the next few days. I'm still hoping and waiting for the north coast to clear up and lose the big swell. Just tried out one of those heating-gel-pack-thingys under my suit today. I picked it up for £15 from amazon, and I think it will be worth it's weight in erm... fish hopefully; and keep me diving for longer this year (us skinny geezers chill down too fast). It pumps plenty of heat out for a good hour and a half. Cheers, Ed

So Ed, when do you plane to activate your heat pad or rather at what stage of the dive do you intend to use the 30 min heat? How do you activate it?

the heat pad lasts for about 1 and a half hours not just 1/2hour, but today I activated it as I was dressing just to test the thing out really (didn't want to be boiled in a bag). I guess the ideal time would be to activate after being in the water for about 1/2 an hour, but the heat pack that I bought doesn't have a button that you can feel through a wet suit, and the activation disk moves around inside the heat pack. I need to figure out some way of ensuring the activation disk stays in one corner so that I can easily feel for it through my suit. There are proprietary heat packs available specifically for under wetsuits but they cost 2 to 3 times the price and I don't think they are anywhere near as big. Ed

I used the heat packs "Hotsuits" ( Hotsuits Wetsuit Heaters....because every hour in the water counts ) in which you place the heat pack into a kidney belt. They work well as i used one all last winter for surfing and again for spearing at the start of the season before things warmed up. The button needs to be placed level with the spine so you know where abouts it is as you can't really feel it thru your suit the you press a few times in that area. Only a few times did i fail to activate it. Be sure to set it off before you start to really feel the cold or it doesn't really work. When you time it right (at the first sign of a chill) you really do feel the warmth spead around. Just like the moment right after you pea in your suit but the warmth stays with you for 30-45min.

Hey Lazuli,glad you managed to get in the water,it wasn't the best of conditions.It was funny,some guys i passed on the walk up stopped and checked out my catch and asked about the vis,then a couple of old dears stopped for a chat and i had to explain it all,then you guys cruised past and stoppped for a chat.
Actually polished off all that fish,had tempura goujons with the golden grey,pan fried the bass fillets with cummin and chilli and my wife just made a delicious pie with the mullet and some prawns.....I almost didn't bother going too....glad i did!

Had a quick dip at Talland this afternoon. Quick as the viz was 1/12-2m, so after 2 or 3 dives I went home for dinner. Still, I felt refreshed and de-stressed after a day at work, so it was worth getting in. It seemed like the poor viz was due more to floating weed than sand, so I guess it may have been better elsewhere or further out. Didn't have time to go further out to see. water temperature was surprisingly warm though.

Had a dip at Harlyn yesterday afternoon. Swell was small around to the west of the bay but vis was poor at about 2.5m I tried further around toward Newtrain out east of the bay - vis was dire and the swell was growing the further east I swam. In fact, I almost got dragged onto the reef at Newtrain by my float in a 5 foot swell (another lesson learned).
Hope to try the south coast tomorrow morning but having just been out at sea off Plymouth the water looks pea green so am not holding my breath....... get it...... 'not holding my breath'!  Ed

Havnt been spearing but have found two Portugese Man O War in the last two days, one on Sennen and one on Marazion beach, something to be wary of while your in the sea!

Went down to Porthscatho and it looked fairly grim but I figured as it's mid October I better get in whatever. The vis was fine, +5m in places and there were a couple of fish, bass mullet about but nothing big enough and they were all really spooky but it was good to get in after a humdinger of a cold. North coast looks good for the weekend.........

Saw very interesting seabass behaviour on Monday. A wrasse was feeding on the seafloor; filtering out sand for whatever was on the menu, and a small bass was feeding on/investigating the ejected debris. The bass followed within inches of the wrasse and mirrored every move; never seen such behaviour before but I was mesmerisied for a good 5 minutes. Got fidgety after that and hunted down a couple of 2 1/2lbers before heading home. Happy hunting over the weekend everyone.

I've seen similar behaviour between bass and wrasse once before,i actually thought i was just looking at wrasse until i realised two of them were bass (it was gloomy!).They seemed to be really hassling the crap out of them.Luckily i fired off a 'warning' shot and the wrasse were left in peace.Either that or i fluffed the shot royaly and scared them away.....Yeah,it was the latter.
Hoping to go sailing Saturday and with careful planning,bring my kit along and try and get in the water for a go while we anchor at a 'lovely little spot' i know. Failing that at least we can go and gorge on oysters at the festival.Hoorah.
