Re: Cornwall 2008.

Indeed, good to meet you too Gutshot. A nice brace of fish of which I am duly jeaulous. After bumping in to you two I went for a stroll along the cliffs - you were causing quite a stir both in and out of the water: sunday walkers pointed in amazement from the cliffs while a sizable curious seal stalked your every move from a distance of 5m or less.
How you manage without gloves I'll never know - I was chilly after my dive and I was coated in rubber from toe to fingertip.

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Haha, there were two seals in when i first got in. They followed me around for a while but i have a tried and tested way of getting rid! Hid in the kelp and as they pass by burst out flapping your arms around screeming out bubbles! It has never failed yet!

I did have a pair of gloves on but not wetsuit gloves. They are sailing glove which only have leather on the inside. Great for bass spines but rubbish for warmth. I may have to start using wettie gloves as trying to gut those two after the dive was a nightmare!

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Glad to hear you're still at it and having success.
I'm working up in Millbrook at a boat yard for a bit and was wondering if anyone here frequented that area.Looks okay on google earth but it looks like there's some firing range thing going on.The drive isn't too long so i might start exploring that stretch next year.

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Hey Badlander,
A couple of great places to go are; around the island at Looe, and Talland Bay. Not done much there myself but heard of BIG bass around the island. I once went in off the point (facing east) up passed Cawsand - very strong rip rounding the point on to the south facing side of the headland - never speared anything but then I'd only been spearing for a few weeks. Fishermen favour the spot so there must be something there to keep them coming back.

There's a dive shop over looking the Island at Looe that sells the odd spearing fishing product too if you need to spend some of that well earned cash...
Good luck.

Good luck.
The stringweed beds between Looe Island and the shore normally hold bass, not sure how late in the year they are there though? Have been on the glass-bottomed boat from Looe harbour which goes over this ground and seen a few. Check out some of the images from spearfishing link from the following site. These are from a BSA comp from years gone bye and yours truly features at the weigh-in.

Talland Bay, Cornwall, UK - a magical place

Check this site for some underwater shots from same comp (Kudos to Dan Burton)

(the aspetto shots are from the aforementioned string weed beds!)

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Got in today on the flood tide on the south coast. The wind had a little too much west in it which made for a very bumpy and snorkel flooding dive! Great viz though. At least 6-7m in on the sandy areas and down to about 2 in the shallow weed area again. The other guy who came with me bagged a 4-5lb'er which was a lovely fish where as the only bass i saw was about 4 inches long. Thought i'd leave him be for a while although the way he swam around me makes me wonder how long, after reaching legal size, he will last!!

I did manage a very good sized mullet. After my slating of mullets last year i have, as some of you have noticed, decided to take the odd one or two. Very nice in the fish cakes tonight! but limit myself to just the one on any dive and also not to take anything over 4lb'ish. I have had a couple in the past which tasted strong and not that nice so i am being fussy as i do not want to waste a catch!

As for the water temp, it is colder than my mother-in-laws heart! I will still keep it going thru dec until it gets too much but i did manage 1 1/2 hrs with out feeling the cold although my hands did feel it a little. I did get my heated kidney belt back which was a masive help. Its just a shame it can't stop the wind chill whilest getting changed .

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Whats on Kernow.. brrr its cold back here in the UK!!

I just got back from my trip to Lanzarote.. We scored a load of class hollow waves and when the surf went flat the diving was simply epic. Some of the most beautiful crystal clear waters I've ever seen.

Bagged some Red Mullet, Parrot Fish (Viejo), Bream (Sargo) and some big yellow things from the Mega Herd! Also saw some rays, some Angel Sharks and few other fish.. unfortunately no big Grouper.. but they'll be there for next time!

Enjoy!

Re: Cornwall 2008.

Very nice mate. clips very well put together. were they all shallow dives, did you need to get a license to dive there, did you take your own gun if so was it a simple process to get it thru customs
