Re: South Devon report 2007

Hopes nose is a very good spot in spring for plaice lots of anglers come down to catch em.
I believe Jez had one there last summer.
Also its quite a deep spot to dive on a high tide you are straight into 10 meters of water from the beach.

This is a dive guide for hopes nose for spearo/freedivers.

Re: South Devon report 2007

What is/are carbon dioxide tables ???

By the way, 'packing' is also great for that extra 20-30 secs breath hold

Re: South Devon report 2007

a co2 table is this

1. ventilate 2:30 static 1:30
2. ventilate 2:15 static 1:30
3. ventilate 2:00 static 1:30
4. ventilate 1:45 static 1:30
5. ventilate 1:30 static 1:30
6. ventilate 1:15 static 1:30
7. ventilate 1:00 static 1:30
8. ventilate 1:00 static 1:30
total duration 25:15
A co2 table trains you to get used to high levels of co2 in the body. basically what you do is breath for 2.30 hold for 1.30 then breath for 2.15 ect ect.
If its to easy or hard change it ,like my statics are 2 minutes and rest periods drop 15 seconds each time.

I also use packing i like to use it on a deeper or longer dive.

I bet you been on deeper blue all day Allan with that bad knee.

Re: South Devon report 2007

I’ve just discovered that my minimum fish size list was printed in 1987 , so I’m thinking it might be a tad out of date.

Has any one got an up to date one they could post, it would be appreciated and also interesting to see how they have changed over the last twenty years

Re: South Devon report 2007

Right I’ve done a bit of googling and came up with a minimum fish size list from the southern sea fisheries district committee, its in PDF format. Link below.

Well not much of a change in twenty years just the odd cm here and there.

minimum fish size

Re: South Devon report 2007

The sea looks OK but a bit of a swell, also there are lots of big boats in the bay at the moment i counted eight yesterday.
so the leg should be good for spring.

Re: South Devon report 2007

some of those fish sizes are stupidly small who would spear a bass 41cms big. .
Also if any one is having troubles with buoyant legs during aspeto (spelling) try some plumbing led its easy to cut and shape to fit around the ankles, i made some today.

The South Seas fisheries table posted by Allan B might be good. It is dated Sept 2006 and includes a footnote that says the Bass limit "increases to 40cm as from 6 April 2007".

Re. National Federation of Sea Anglers limits, are those national legal limits or just for federation competitions? I thought there was regional variation in limits, with each fishery setting its own limits at or above national & EU limits (or does the new bass limit bring them all into line)?

Talking Re: South Devon report 2007

Here something a little more definite, the DEFRA website (the government organisation that is deaf to rural affairs?):
DEFRA limits English Bass sizes for British fisherperkins

Quote:
Bass landing size increase to improve the stock
...
From April 6, 2007, fishermen and anglers will not be allowed to land bass any smaller than 40cm Fisheries Minister... announced today. The current limit is 36 cm.
...
“The recreational fishing sector makes a major contribution to our economy and it is important that their voice, as well as those of commercial fishermen, is taken into account in fisheries management.
...
The increase to 40cm will bring the minimum landing size closer to the average spawning size for bass (42cm). As a result, more juvenile fish will be protected and there would be increased recruitment to the spawning stock. This will in turn increase the number and size of bass available for capture to both the commercial and recreational sector.
...
Further measures in relation to bass are also being considered, including ‘bag limit’ restrictions that would limit the number of fish individual sea anglers can take.
...
To accompany the increased minimum landing size, the Minister has also announced an increase in the mesh size for fixed gear for targeted bass fisheries from the current 90mm to 100mm to reduce potential discards.
...
Notes to editors
...
2. The increased minimum landing size and minimum mesh size will apply to English fishing vessels wherever they fish and Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh fishing vessels when in the English part of UK fishery limits. The minimum mesh size applies to all enmeshing nets (such as gill, tangle, drift, trammel and seine nets) but only to those vessels whose catches compose over 10% bass.
...
4. The minimum landing size will also apply to sea anglers, whether fishing from the shore or from a vessel. These measures will be implemented through a Statutory Instrument which will come into force on 6 April 2007.
....
