DIY Pole spear Q's

I am working on two diy pole spears(About 4-5 long).

One made out of an old ski pole and the other i am still thinking about materials. Both are for hunting in shallow water and jetty rocks.

What i need to know is...

1. What are some diy "Band" Materials (The Rubber thingy at the back of the pole)?

2. What is the best spear tip for small fish(Up to about 8lb)?

2A. Were can i buy cheap spear tips?

2B. Should i get different tips for open(Ish) water hunting and hunting in rocks?

2C. DIY spear tips, any how to's?

But whats the fun in just buying the spear?

Its about geting my meals with some thing I made with my own two hands.

Also I am way too cheap.

Anyway......

I just got back from HD and i now have two 48inch long,1/2inch diameter (Wood)poles to use for my spears.

I also got 10 feet of surgical tubing.

Still need advice on a tip.

Re: DIY Pole spear Q's

ok so here is what you can do. have you ever seen a surgical needle? try to use a grinder to grind the tip of the ski pole tp a point like the sergical needle. next at the bottom of the point drill a hole through the center of the pole and add a hook type thing then string a wire through the hole. look at spears points online it should be pritty simple. then at the bottom of the pole drill a hole but make sure you round the edges so it doesnt cut through the surgical tubing when its under tension. i still think you are going to have trouble with the band cuz i think its just gonna keep tearing due to the ski pole edges being so thin. but its worth a try. when that is done i think you can go out and give it a try. idk how its gonna work tho the one i have is solid all the way through, from the sling to the tip.

that is the tip i was thinking about. or i saw on a man vs wild show where he took a peice of bamboo and cut it down the stalk in hald 2 times so in quarters you can try that and then push rods down the cuts so the 4 quadrants would spread apart. idk how well that would work with steel but its just another idea.

here are some other tips to take a look at if you want to try something else.

good luck
