what is a "t" laminate?

any one know this ? on the Wong website they say they laminate in a "t" formation for strength. What do they mean exactly? I can infer, a piece on top, but what dimensions in relation to barrel dimension?

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

Not sure on the actual dimensions (my gun is painted but something along the lines of 2/3 of the vertical height split into 3 vertical laminates and the other 1/3 a 1 horizontal top laminate.

A bit like this:

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

I just checked a couple of my guns.

On a Mahi gun, the two vertical side-by-side laminations are about 1.75" tall near the butt, and the horizontal piece across the top is about 0.625" high. Both of them seem to taper toward the muzzle.

On my ono gun, the vertical pieces are about 1.878 high near the butt and the cap across the top is about 0.625" high.

Of course the enclosed track is cut in the horizontal piece in both guns.

I looked at the butt section in my 57" magnum hybrid, and I can't detect any seams. Apparently it is all cut from one piece of wood.

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

I am not sure how important the number of laminates or their size matters? The Principal aim is a very ridged end product.
Here are a couple of interesting laminate options.

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

My own preference is for a simple run of vertical laminates only but an odd number (5 typically) so there is a central one for the track. I wouldn't think for a minute that there would be any substance in that but it's just the way I feel comfortable with.

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

I am a great believer in doing what you think is best but In my case I like to make things that look pretty! In my opinion mutable laminates look fantastic when the gun is shaped & top coated.

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

maybe next time, for this stock, i am going with5 piece vertical laminate, i am using a slice of ipe for center slice, for stiffness, the pieces right now are 74" x2 3/4" with 5 laminates for a total of 2 1/8" wide ,(w/o glue) i hope to make a 65" enclosed delrin track mid handle. i am gonna use a riffe trigger i already have, the only thing i cant use off the riffe comp42, i am dismantling for parts, is the safety, i plan to taper the bottom of the barrel, but i am not sure how much. actually, why taper the barrel of your gun? dont you want extra buoyancy at muzzle?i dont know, but all the nicest guns are tapered so that is my tentative plan, anyway.setting steel has taken to using ipe in center of his barrells for a super slick track for his wooden, enclosedtrack, guns, with good results. this stuff rules. Kumaru is probably the way to go though, (resilient, oily, super dense, and floats! )unlike true ipe. i got a couple of end tables that look really nice,, made out of Kumaru it is a good thing they arent 6 ft long, or i would be cutting them up!! this stuff is expensive , so i might have to wait a while to see if i can snag some somewhere, or trade or something,(i got alot of high friends in places) anyone want some ipe?? i will trade you some stock material for something cool from your locale. i dont know , just an idea. i have enough to part with a couple barrells. i actually have 1 barrell glued up,(3 piece ipe 65" longx2 1/4 high x 2 1/4 wide. sinks like a rock! i decided not to use it as a result. good for freeshafting or scuba spearing,(not my cup of tea) i planned on slicing it up for use in mixed composite, which i recommend.

Re: what is a "t" laminate?

Upsidedown "T" makes more sense for an enclosed/rail track

First effort?! Wow...very cool. How do they shoot? Any "lesson's learned"? And where did you get the handle / trigger assembly?

Thx,
T.

thanks , the handles are both off short guns that i had around, but never used because they were short and useless, one was a jbl, one was an AB Biller. the triggers on the short guns in this instance are the same as on longer models. so , originally my plan was to simply make a longer barrel to turn short guns ,(cheap)into long guns (more expensive) then while i was at it, i wanted to modify the muzzle to imitate my riffe guns,(open muzzle, with line holding down spear, for silent release. in the case of the jbl, i had already, a 55 inchx3/8 thick jbl spear, so i planned the gun to be that length. In the case of the Biller, i looked in the catalog to see the longest spear available by them, which is 60inches, so the other gun designed for that. the front wings are from my teak cut offs, from barrel consruction.i still have not used the Biller, it is too big for reef hunting, so it will have to wait three more weeks until my boat is finished to use it. the jbl, i usedonce and it fires REALLY smooth, i hit a huge black grouper and he bent the spear, where the tip screws in that eventually broke when i tried to bend it back. Ironic , since i actually planned the lenth of my entire gun around a spear that lasted for 10 minutes. but it does fire nicely. Now i have the fever to build a really nice one,(65" enclosed delrin track, to shoot a 72 inch x 9/16 spear. mid handle. aluminum muzzle.i laminated the barrell with a 5 piece lam with a 1/4 inch slice of Ipe in center. it isnt perfectly true, for some reason, so i took it to my buddy in the cabinet shop, and he is gonna true it for me for me, with their laser sharp planers. after i get it back i will start.
