Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Last night the Portland end of Chesil Beach was teaming with mackerel. The water looked like it was boiling with all the fish movement. A 10 year old lad in my street caught 83 mackerel in an hour using feathers and his mate managed to land a 5.5lb bass, again with feathers.

Grab your guns. They're here.............. finally!!!!!!!!

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Hi
I'm very keen to start freediving in Dorset and am moving to Blandford in August. Any help for contactingsomeone to help me get started? I have a bit of experience and my own kit (but no wetsuit) but am rusty. I would like to get into spearfishing sometime too.
Would really appreciate some help!
Thanks :-)

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

...Hi, I took a trip today with my brother to shore dive Tilly Whim....what an interesting hunting ground (and scenery)! I only managed to get there for about full low and was surprised at what I found. Firstly I noticed the lobster and while convincing him to come home with me, I noticed the school of silver flashing bass detouring away from me, never to be seen again on further downs. Damn.

Oh well, I carried on and soon shot a smallish pollack on one small pinnacle. It is a really kelpy location this Tilly Whim, with patches of stringweed around the rocks. Ah! another lobster just on the edge of a patch of gravel, another pot candidate. Then another pollack.
I started to make my way back to my exit and as I came over the top of a rock and peered down into a hole the silvery flash trying to hide...got him..
Nice place that Tilly Whim!

Regards

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Well here goes.Tried to go in at newton's cove but it was just too merky so went to portland bill.Things looked good the water was clear and not too many people fishing.Visability turned out to be variable between 5 and 3 meters depending on wether i swam over rocks or just kelp.Within seconds of getting in a lone mullet swam through some string weed and ended up on my stringer.More mullet appeared soon after but i left them alone.Bass showed up too but they were all schoolies so nothing else for the pot but did help jellyfish that had it's tenticles tangled in string weed.Met a couple of other spearo's who said they shot there on saturday but the seal was about!!Can't understand the lack of fish at portland bill, very few wrasse or pollock to be seen aswell as no large bass.Hope everybody else had more luck.Didn't take any pictures of the mullet as its face fell off when i shot it!!(not pretty).

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Sounds like people had a productive weekend, this week looks like a cracker weather wise too, i think i'm going to take next week off work and spend it in the sea! Tilly Whim sounds like an interesting place to get out to, i'll make the effort next week to try a few new places and let everyone know about them.

Martinr, if you're looking to get back into freediving and trying out spearfishing in Dorset i would recommend getting over to the dive shops in Portland and Weymouth (especially Portland Oceaneering - www.portlandoceaneering.com), i travel over there from Bournemouth and find the guys out there to be really helpful in getting the right gear and there is usually someone about to go out to tag along with. If you've got a specific date you wanted to go out on, I think it'd be worth putting it on this board and someone will be able to meet up with you/recommend some sites.

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

I dived Portland Bill Sunday as well, Again, loads of Mullet about, I had one but left the rest alone. They were all at 13+ meters. The Wrasse were on the drop of as usual.... but as Gloworm said, there were only a few schooly Bass about nothing worth shooting. Still, viz was at about 10mrts when the tide was slack on the drop off, but soon droped to about 3/4mtrs when the tide started to move again. Spend an age with a fisherman whos prop had snagged and caught a bouy and rope he was being towed by another boat. He tried to pay me... ere, like what am I meant to do with that out there! (never mind I got his name and boat name - I'll find him in the harbour ;o) - anyone know where 'Spot on to' moors?

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Glowworm, I'd be up for getting out to dancing ledge over the weekend, my usual buddy can't do Saturday but I'm free either day.

I was looking at the google images and realised that the last time i went to dancing ledge was to absail and can't remember any access to the water without ropes. Please someone prove me wrong or we'll have to pick another spot.Durdle door or lulworth cove may have to do if not.Post your thoughts and we will try to arrange something.Sunday is the best day for me.

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Hi Gloworm,

It is possible to get in the water at Dancing Ledge but you have to time it pretty well - Pretty much ensuring that the water is at a level so you can just slide off the lower tier.

According to the books I've read, getting out is harder than getting in, but this will depend on the swell.

I've not dived there but would be interested in giving it a shot.

On a silmilar note. If anyone would like to contribute to the Spearfishing pages on the Portland Oceaneering web site, let me know (www.portlandoceaneering.com). Photos, stories, recipes, top tips, hunting spots etc..... ade@busterlung.co.uk
