Well went in today with 1 shot,1 kill @ newtons cove but nothing doing on the large fish front.Lots of red mullet, thick lip mullet, bass and pollock but all were small.1 shot came close to some large mullet but they stayed just out of range. The visability was going from 5 meters to 0 meters and was very frustrating.1 shot managed to see one flatfish and while i was looking for flatties out of the merky water swam the biggest, fattest sea trout i have ever seen.He must have been between 4-5 lbs and came very close to inspect me.Could he have know i was not going to shoot him?Anyway hopefully better luck tomorrow.

I dived Portland Friday, not much couple of Bass about 2lbs and a couple of Pollock and a nice Lobster. (Saturday was spent with the family) I was going to go Sunday as well but fell asleep in the sun in my back garden... which was nice (until my son started a water fight that is so I did at least get wet - ha ha ha!)

The dive was very favourable with clear conditions. I saw some very large wrasse initially on the inner reef before moving off to the outer edges of the deeper reef. The current was stronger here and I got a reasonable Pollack. Drifting with the tide back in and east towards the approaches to the boat moorings I did not see anything except plenty of small fish. I kept having drops as I went along and I came across a perfect ledge of rock....I had a look and spotted my first english conger! He was massive with a head like a dog with about 4ft of body visible due to the way he was backed side on to me under the ledge. I wish I had my camera with me! I'll look for him next time.. I seemed to continue east out along the deepest reaches of the first reef and a fair way out. Eventually I found a second patch of main reef which is past the mark of the rock groyne with the red beacon. Out here the current is stronger too and what can only be described as wide cutting in the reef converge near some undulating rock and the fish just seem to love this area as they were swirling like they were reef sharks. I did an aspetto and eventually the first sea bass timidly came to see me. I hit him just below the dorsal at almost full range and he dived wildly into the kelp and weed so I surfaced leaving my float line to do its job. I took a breath and headed down my line towards the kelp...and as I approached, silver flash and he was gone like the proverbial bullet. Damn! How'd he get off!?!!?? Coincidently my buddy Rowan and I were talking in the car park about crimping the flopper a bit near the shaft so there is a very slight 'friction' point at about 45° to stop the flopper closing back down on the shaft so easily. Oh well...I had to make do with a few more poor mans cod (I also need the heads for my very successful crayfish trapping I have some pictures attached, but not of a the particularly nice fresh plaice and chips from the Ringstead Beach cafe (can't resist a flatfish) Regards |

Good pics, thats not a bad Pollock for Dorset either! Well done. I'm off for an evening dive after work tonight I think, looks a bit windy and ruff, but that should be fine, stir the bottom up a bit and bring the Bass back in.

Thanks all, I think if a jetski cant see that float then...
But it is very useful to lie on and paddle it like a submarine back home against a current. I actually got the Rob Allen 35l float online from Dave (spearo) and initially when I saw it I thought nah to big for over here (UK), but am very happy with it now and would not change it...I might just add 'DIVERS' down the side going on the recent near misses. Alison, with regards to the Jelly's....I had a casual dive a couple of weeks ago off Studland's Middle Beach chasing a couple of big mullet and some bass hiding in weed like you describe.. I was only wearing my jacket top and baggies (SA for boardshorts!) and I am still looking like I have a serious eczma patch on my inner thigh from the sting. It itches like crazy now and is still marking me, even after at the time, using a bottle of vinegar from the beach cafe and followed up by various other treatments..... The funny thing is that I have had less discomfort after many a bluebottle sting back home. P.S Do you like the 'Lobster Loop™' my buddy Rowan fashioned out of a tube of stainless and some excess float line. Dog catcher style for the holes! Regards |

Lobster loop is good, I had a freind who used to use something similar years ago.
What kind of jellies stung you? The only ones that get me are those white with brown spots ones (lion jellyfish I think they are called), all the purple ones are fine.

No jet skies will not see you no matter what you carry with you, last time one past just 3 meter ahead of me which makes 4 meters off the float
I am getting used to it, it happens frequently. |
