Probably the tenticles were broken off and stuck in the weed, I got stung on my chin last week with none around but it only bothered me for about 10 minutes then it was gone

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Dived est side of the Bill last night, just a tad ruff then! used my short 60 comressed air gun with my (new, never used before) trident head. Man, does that stop fish!! Great for in holes, had 3x3lb Mullet out of holes, but missed a coupke of fish (one Bass about 3lb and a Pollock) at long range. The spear was dropping as the trident was quite heavey (it's a stainless steal one so not as light as the carbon fibre ones)

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Alison, here is the set up I use for my Trident, although it is good for hunting in holes, it wasn't so good in open water. I expect I will use this gun as a back up in comps, but stick to my trusty Beuchat 75 rubber gun for now.

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Any one fancy catching a REALLY BIG fish - there's a big Porbeagle out on the Shambles at the moment.... apparently it's not scared of divers.... the books say they should only eat fish, but I'm not sure the shark has read the book!! To be fair Porbeagles and Blues are often out on the shambles, just best not to keep you fish on your belt. Im out in a boat tomorrow PM, hopefully get to some of my Bass holes..... laters all.

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

I'm back from a weeks break at home in Dorset, managed to get out and about fishing a few times but saw nothing dinner-sized except mullet, man am i sick of mullet, where are all the bass? Lack of bass aside i had several great trips and wanted to thank SurfnSpear for the photos, Glowworm for the buddying and Busterlung for getting us out on wednesday when it was too rough for his boat. I'm off back down tomorrow and am hoping to get out if the weather holds, might even see some bass....

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

Sorry have not posted for a while ( a year I think !) . But I have been lurking around the board to see what's going on .

Did not get in the water as early as I would of liked to this year due to a burst ear drum.

went in this morning at Newtons cove . Shot one Bass about 3 lb (sorry no digital camera for photo's ) vis was a bit murky but cleared further out along the breakwater. Crossed over into Portland harbour , no fish apart from a few big wrasse .

While diving down near the base of the breakwater I excited to find a new wreck I had not seen before . A small fishing boat complete with cabin and still connected to a large bouy floating 2m under the surface . The wreck was not listed in dive dorset and lay at about 12m ( spring high tide )

Off now to cook my fish , might try to get out tomorrow if the wx ok.

Re: Dorset Spearfishing

No sharks this weekend. Couple Bass about 3lb and 4lb, and then got chased off the breakwater by the harbour master. When I asked him how much it was for a licence - he just said 'depends'. I said ‘depends on what?’ he just kept saying ‘depends’. When I asked him where to get a licence he said ‘from me’, and ‘where is your office' I asked. ‘On the shore’ he replied. Nice and helpful then! The by-law for having a fishing licence on the Portland breakwater was from 1960ish, for the Navy!.... not for some private company to extort money from people. It's a pain. Hardly encourages tourism (at least his attitude didn't!). He chased all the small boats off as well. I wonder if there’s anyway of challenging this old out of date by-law? (I was on the outside of the breakwater)
