I’m going to go with a Martian attack force which could have been held back by the SBS and during the battle one of our boys dropped a mag.
As Almostafish has said it’s not the Marines that train around Portland.
Report it to the coastguard someone will retrieve it the trooper in question will get a good rollicking and that will be the end of it.
Accidents happen even to the best of us.

Re: Dorset Spearfishing 2006

is it my imagination or do summers go faster when you are a spearfisher? So out of interest does everyone put the guns back in the shed and try to spent some time with the other half (having not seen her properly at a weekend since april) or does the fun continue - please say it so!

flyflicker, almostafish and myself dived all winter last year - a bit cold on some days but we still had plenty of fish! So, my guns never get put away...

Re: Dorset Spearfishing 2006

Back from Denmark last night, so thought I'd give you the lowdown on what I found. I was staying on an island called Fyn to the southwest of Copenhagen. The water was about 14 degrees, although it varied from spot to spot quite dramatically. 5mm surf suit was just fine though...

Fishing wise it was a bit disappointing really. The main 'sport' fish over there is sea trout (salmo trutta trutta). People spin for them a lot off the beaches and points. The sea is very shallow, and doesn't have the same find of rocky dramatic nature of the UK, nor does it have much depth. At most spots I swam about 500m offshore or so and that water was still no more than 3m deep. There also didn't seem to be much cover for the fish in terms of kelp / stringweed / rocks and holes. It was very sandy and flat for the most part.

The trout were a bugger. They didn't seem to behave like bass or mullet, in that the aspettos had no effect at drawing anything in at all. The trout were very, very wary, and only ever came within about 4m a handful of times. They were very quick, and I missed every single one I had a shot on. Definitely a fish for the experts or even for line fishing. There weren't heaps of them about either, so I didn't get too many opportunities.

I saw zero pollack, zero mullet, zero wrasse, all the usual customers on the south coast were missing. There were plenty of bait fish - sand smelt and sand eels. The odd eel or 2, but I'm not a fan of eel so left well alone. There were lots of crabs, but not big enough to eat. No lobster - probably too shallow / not enough crevices to hide in. Scallops and mussells everywhere though.

There were SH*Tloads of jellyfish everwhere - some of them packing a pretty vicious sting, and my hands and face took a pasting on every dive!

Flatfish are the thing over there. I shot a flounder and a plaice, the plaice being an absolute cracker, big firm-fleshed and delicious. The flounder were everywhere but don't make such great eating.

So all in all, pretty average spearo I would say. I reckon you'd need some local info, and a boat to get you into deeper water for better action. Spearo is not popular at all over there, didn't see another soul with a speargun. Maybe given what I saw (or rather didn't) down there!!

Still, it was an absolutely beautiful place, the water is so blue and clear, viz was rarely less than 3m, even with quite a wind over the top. A cracking relaxing, if largely fishless, trip...

Looking forward to getting back in in Dorset for the last of the Summer...
