Re: Winter hunting in dorset

The sea is generally cold, below 10 degrees, winter storms usually provide no viz and swell/chop to match. Bass usually disappear end of November to reappear in March April. Cod is a winter fish but not many are taken by spearos. By the way i'm assuming you mean spearfishing and not hunting on terra firma?

You tell them! What a bunch of smeg heads!
The answer is simple if you live in Portland:First wait until December then just go along Castle road to Castletown then onto main road. At the junction with Incline road fork off down Canteen and down onto Balaclava road, Bingo jump in and go hunting
COME ON GUYS!!!! NOT DIFFICULT WAS IT!!!!

There is usually no viz and they are normally confined to 'secret' spots. I know one was taken at a Portland comp a few years ago by the legendary Pete Crawford. I think they are more prevalent at North Sea marks; in the Channel I believe they are mostly found in deep wrecks, too deep for average spearo.

There must be a kelpy population down there somewhere. I saw on this website some talk of cod... Portland Fishing
Not sure if that was pelagic cod coming inshore during spring or coastal stock tho.
Plenty of cod from shore round here at xmas but I'd trade My xmas cos for a bass or mullet anyday.
