Frenzel? how to tell.

hi everyone,

quick question i have been spearing for a long time and have just started focusing on freediving specifically, starting to train alot more.

question is how do i tell what style of equalisation i am using.

i know you use your tongue in frenzel but im not sure what style i am using, i can equalise on a full exhale, and with my mouth open (friend said if i can do that its frenzel) but i'm not sure.

any comments would be greatly appreciated.

DivingDane

Re: Frenzel? how to tell.

You can do both Valsvalva and Frenzel with the mouth open, so that's not really a good indicator.

The simplest test is: put your hand on you belly/diaphragm and and equalize. If you feel it move, you're doing the valsalva. If there is no movement below your throat - likely a frenzel.

Re: Frenzel? how to tell.

It sounds like you're doing Frenzel. If you empty your lungs to the point where you can't exhale and still be able to equalize with a mouthful of air, then you're doing Frenzel. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong .

Re: Frenzel? how to tell.

well looks like i've been doing frenzel all along then.

There i was trying to work out how to do it with the tongue movement and all that jazz in the pool and getting confused, when i was already doing it.

thanks for the help guys.

Re: Frenzel? how to tell.

Hehe, that's very common. Happened to me too (finally after months of trying to figure it out I realized I'd been doing frenzel since childhood).

That's why I think it's good usually to start with the "belly test" - if it turns out you're not doing frenzel, then go into the technicalities. I think it's good to understand how/why it works, but in learning it, the details can sometimes just get in the way...

The mouthfill is then a little bit different story - especially an efficient mouthfill.

Re: Frenzel? how to tell.

Dane, the best way to learn about equalisation is to do an AIDA course. In today's advanced courses you will be tought how to equalise Frenzel-Fattah mouthfill technique.

good luck,
Pat

Re: Frenzel? how to tell.

Hi Pat fish

thats what i've been planning on.

i'm lucky enough to have Erez Beatus as a friend here in Australia and jus completed a level one course now looking at doing the more advanced levels which do cover the more advanced equalizing techniques.

just figured i may aswell learn as much as i can before the course on my own and that way i can focus on some of the other aspects of diving deep that i dont know about in the course.

Again thanks guys this deeeper blue is without doubt one of the most valuable resources a freediver has!
