Hands free.

Ok I read before, but I can't remember where, about a hands free method that is not frenzel. Its like just opening your ear tubes with muscles. Like yawning without moving your jaw. It seems to work for me, but I'm wondering how deep I can go with this.

Re: Hands free.

yeah ive done the same thing, where i just kinda pop my ears. As far as i know though this doesn't really work at any real depth, because the air has to come from the oral/nasal/sinus area and so needs something to stop it going out of your nose. Perhaps it is possible though? how far have you gone with it?

good q.

Re: Hands free.

If you can fully open your e-tubes it will work as long as you can keep air in your mouth. Most divers need a little pressure and switch methods at some point. That will still let you get below your neutral buoyancy and maybe into free fall with both hands free. A big advantage.

Re: Hands free.

Ive only gone about 25ft with it lol. But thats as deep as the water since I have started doing it in water. On the surface I usually use vasalva. And do the muscle ear popping to the bottom.

Re: Hands free.

Bill - question for you...
I am new to freediving, PB 23m and also pretty sure I am doing BTV equalisation hence reading this post "hands free".
Before the last session I found I could hold e-tubes open on land, and tried whilst diving, getting down to 23m handsfree holding them open. From your previous answer I wondered if you used the method or knew more on it?

Whilst I seem to be able to find heaps of info on the other methods of equalisation I dont seem to be able to find as much on this one, I've also read varying opinions on BTV and depth.

Would be very interested to hear from anyone who uses the method or if anyone knows of links to any good reading material on it as keen to learn more about it.

Thanks.

Re: Hands free.

I learned how to do it before I was a teenager and it worked fine for almost 30 years but after ten years in the California smog and 20 years working at airports I need to use pressure to equalize the sinuses so I only get to try it a few times a year any more and only to about 20 meters. It's well worth working on even if you can't use it very deep.
Like any other work on equalization, when you find the depth where you have trouble, stop the next dive 5-10 meters shallower, relax, clear fully and procede at a snail's pace. Head position can be very important.
