Somehow I don't think that Mother Matera raised her little boy to be fishbait. If I saw anything like that out here, (and we do have 'em, believe me) I'd pack it in for at least a day . . . maybe a week! Like Shane said . . .

Hiya
Just returned from a 5 day holiday. Since the spearing was quite good in the Struisbaai area, myself and my wife deicided to take a short holiday. Amongst the GREAT spearing, we did manage to get some sight-seeing in as well!! Was actually fun just to act like tourists, chatting to EVERYBODY on the harbour about fish and fishing and sharks!!! I unfortunately only went spearing on one of the days, which was when my dive buddies came down from Cape Town. Struisbaai is really NOT a place to dive on your own. We shot some nice Yellowtail and a couple of bank fish and was also greeted by a young 3m great white. Fortunately, nobody was injured and thankfully the shark was also left unharmed!! There were some anxious moments, with everybody scrambling to get on board!! Luckily for us, we only saw the one, so diving was resumed a couple of kilomteres away. The picture with the GW approaching the boat was taken whilst divers were trying to get to the boat from the other side. The loaded speargun with powerhead was just a safety precaution, should things turn nasty. Some pic's.... Regards miles

Hiya
Huan, those pinkish reddish fish with white streaks are Red Stumpnose. PRIZED eating fish!!! Very highly rated table fare. Pretty easy to shoot though. They are suprisingly well comoflauged. All you see is a white dot approaching you. Thats the white fore-head, because the fish swims straight at you. When its with-in range, they generally turn broad-side, so as to get a better look at you!!!! Then you go........thwack!! The nicest part about them is that they some-times seemingly appear out of no-where. One moment there's no fish, the next there is a couple of 2-5kg fish right in front of your gun!!! You get different types of Steenbras. Red Steenbras is a reddish coloured fish. HIGHLY aggresive, has canine like teeth and is VERY territorial. Once again, they are easy to shoot, as they generally will approach a diver with-out fear. They have been known to attack divers as well. Story goes that the survivors of the wreck the BIRKENHEAD was attacked and eated by Red Steenbras. They grow up to about 80kgs and prefer deep rocky waters. When the cold thermoclines set in, they search the warmer shallower pinnacles where the spearo's can then shoot them. A bit of trivia, the scientific name is Petrus rupestris. Supposed named after Peter, which supposed gave THIS fish to Jesus, so that he could multiply them and feed the masses. White Steenbras on the other hand is found in the surf zone, normally foraging the sand for worms , prawns and crabs. They are a silver fish with black vertical bars on the side. Scientific name: Lithognathus lithognathus and they grow to about 25kg's. Hope that helps!! Regards miles

By the way Miles what are you doing with all that fish? Are you eat them? Don't fry them all unless you want to be like "wheel". Fish is very very good protein source so if you can arrange good "fish diet" for yourself, with little exercise you will have glorious six pack ABs to make jealous some folk in here
